Whether you like it or not, there shall come a time in your career when you are the least quailed person in the room. This can mean that you will be passed over for promotions either because you lack the experience or the qualifications.
However, you can still grow in your career even without the necessary qualifications. In this article, see what you can do to achieve growth in an industry you are not very qualified in.
1. Bring new ideas to the table
A great way to stand out when starting out in an industry you have no serious experience in is coming up with new ideas that can help the company grow. No matter how big or small, good ideas are what drives companies.
This means that if you are able to show your bosses that you have good ideas that can better the organization, then you will end up being an important part of the team and it won’t matter that you don’t have the experience others have.
2. Be different
You can never stand out if you are trying to be like everyone else, you need to be willing to be different.
Your employer is not looking to have an employee that is just like everyone else. Because you lack experience in the industry, you should try as much as possible to be different from everyone else.
If you are looking to achieve any kind of career growth, being just like everyone else will not cut it. You have to stand out from the crowd for your employer to notice you and see that you deserve the promotion.
3. Embrace your youth — or inexperience
Contrary to popular belief, being the youngest one in the room can be an advantage. Not only do you have more time to build your career but you also have the opportunity to grow.
A great way to achieve career growth is through constant learning. Because you have very little experience, you should ensure you are learning every single day.
By learning new skills, you then become better at your job and your boss sees you improving which can be a great ground for a promotion.
An employer is more likely to promote someone who they see is willing to learn and puts in the effort as opposed to someone who doesn’t make an effort to learn new things.
4. Come up with small goals for yourself
Achieving your goals can be a great motivator to do more. Considering how hard it is to start a new career, goal setting can be a great way to motivate yourself not to give up.
However, you have to ensure that the goals you set for yourself are realistic and you shouldn’t expect too much too soon, as this can be discouraging if you find you are not reaching your targets.
5. Don’t ask for permission
This is the same as being willing to take initiative. You cannot wait for your boss to give you permission to be innovative.
Most employers will appreciate someone who is willing to take charge and go the extra mile without having to be told.
Go ahead and take on that extra project or offer to help out without necessarily being asked to. This will show your employer that you are passionate and are dedicated to the company which can lead to a promotion.
You just need to ensure that you are not doing something that goes against the company policy.
In order to succeed and grow in your career, you will need to put in the hard work, you should not let the fact that you don’t have a lot of experience as everyone else keep you from achieving career growth.
Find ways you can improve your skills and show your employer that even though you don’t have the experience you are still valuable and have a lot to offer the company.
