You spend a lot of your adult life at work, so it makes sense that you would want to work for a great organization.
Be it the compensation, location, company culture or work environment, your place of work should give you joy. A survey conducted by Brighter Monday revealed the top 100 companies to work for in Kenya in 2018. These companies vary in terms of industry and size and they were ranked from information given by current and previous employees.
Women, usually get shortchanged when it comes to working for big corporations. They are not treated as equals to their male colleagues in terms of the allowances and pay while others have to deal with sexual assault and harassment.
However, some of the top companies as listed in the survey, have created conducive work environments for women.
At the top of the list is Safaricom the biggest telecommunications company in Kenya. It is no secret that many people want to work for the company.
From employee benefits such as a day care center, health insurance cover, transport, company airtime, 4 months maternity leave and many other great perks, it’s easy to understand why.
Considering that about 51% of the company’s employees are women, it makes sense that the organization would go the extra mile to ensure that they provide a great work environment for them.

Things that make working for Safaricom a great choice for women
The Kenyan Law provides for three months paid maternity leave. Safaricom takes it a step further by providing four months plus it’s possible to push it to six months if it’s combined with annual leave days.
The firm also has an additional benefit known as mother’s shift where the employee is allowed to work for an average of 5 hrs a day for 6 months after maternity leave ends at full-time pay.
That’s not all; Safaricom extended its maternity leave to include the non-natural parents as part of its employee-focused reforms. If you choose to adopt a child; you are entitled to a two-month maternity leave.
The long working hours can take a toll on any mother who might feel like they are missing out on their child’s growth which is where the daycare center comes in.
Workers can bring their children to work and can be sure that they are being looked after by trained professionals as opposed to leaving them at home and not being assured of their safety.
Comprehensive medical insurance cover
Unlike most of the companies in Kenya, Safaricom offers mothers medical insurance that covers, antenatal clinics, both natural and cesarean deliveries as well as immunizations for up to 9 months.
The CEO of Safaricom Bob Collymore once said, “It is a shame that in the 21st century, there are companies forcing their female employees to express milk in the toilet.”
The company has a designated breastfeeding and expressing room with all the necessary facilities to make life easier for breastfeeding women.
Safaricom launched the 100 percent Human at Work programme last year which emphasizes that it was time for businesses to stop looking at people as ‘resources’ and to start looking at them as ‘human beings’.
Employees rate the company highly despite the pressure to always perform at the top of your game. To them even though the job is tough, having these benefits helps lessen the strain and stress.
“We believe that we can only be at our best if our people are at their best. Our employees are crucial to our success and that is why we have undertaken several initiatives to inspire and get the best out of them,” the firm says in its financial statements.
