What Do You Do When An Interviewer Calls You At A Bad Time

If you have been applying for jobs for a while now, naturally you would expect one of those applications to pay off with an interview invite.
You don’t know when but are optimistic it will happen.
But what happens when that call finally comes but you are not in a position to pick the call maybe in a noisy matatu or even at work. At that time you are not prepared and wonder how to go about it.
So how do you handle that situation ensuring that you don’t lose the opportunity?
1. First answer the phone appropriately & professionally
Just because the call has come at the wrong time doesn’t mean that you have no way out.  Panicking while talking to a prospective employer is the last thing you want to do.
Create an impression that you are a professional by acting like one. Let them not lose interest on you at this point.
For instance, the recruiter will probably want to confirm that they are talking to the right person.
Don’t be rude.
Instead acknowledge that by stating the name like “Hello. This is Tobias.”

2. Be enthusiastic and show gratitude
At the beginning of the hiring process, your employer only knows you from what they have on your CV. Your personality and attitude is what gets you to the next step when you are contacted for an interview.
By showing that you are grateful that the recruiter took their time to contact you, you create rapport which is very important in any interview.
For instance, you can say, “I was expecting a call from you. I’ve been really excited about this opportunity since I applied for it. Thanks so much for calling.”

In as much as you would not want to lose that opportunity, you don’t have to converse with the interview and miss out on important detailed just because you are at a noisy place.
Apologize without going into too much detail that you can’t talk at the moment but you will call them at an appropriate time.
With a statement like “I am sorry I can’t hear you clearly right now. I am in a noisy matatu but I will call you in 30 minutes time.”
And when you get time, ensure that you call then back at the time you had promised, not the next day and not very late and make sure you are prepared well.
