How Professional CV Writing Works

By Lilian Wamaitha
Getting a job as any recruiter will tell you begins with writing a CV.
It’s your marketing document and hence the first contact you have with an employer.
How your CV is written at the end of the day determines whether or not an employer will consider you for an interview.
This is why a lot of people turn to professional CV writing service providers like Corporate Staffing Services to get that crucial document in order.
But how does professional CV writing work and is it really worth the cost?
I sat down with Brenda Mielizu, one of the CV writers at CSS to shed light on what happens right from when you make an enquiry to when you have your CV written.
Step 1: CV Review
When you walk in and want your CV re-vamped, the first thing is to make sure that your CV needs a makeover.
“There are clients you will find who have no need for a CV make over but just a few corrections here and there,” says Brenda.
The CV review session is supposed to shed light on what your CV is missing and how it should be and it’s free of charge.
Only then can you move on to getting your CV done.
A review can take between 20 minutes to an hour depending on your years of experience and how complex the CV is.
During the review, you also get to share how you want your CV tailored and to which profession.
“There are those who have worked several jobs and now want to focus on one particular profession. In such a case, that person will tell you what you need to focus on and which jobs to leave out.”
Step 2: The CV Re-writing
If after the review you feel that you now need a professional touch on the CV, you can go ahead and request one of the CV writers to re-do it.
The charges are dependent on your years of experience rather than the length of your CV.
Once you make payment, the CV team goes ahead and starts on your CV.
This takes 2 working days excluding Sundays to get your new CV. The reason behind this is to give you a top notch CV that is tailored not only to your needs but those of the job market.
Your new CV will be sent to you via email and once you go through it, you proceed to step three.
Step 3: The final review
So you now have your brand new CV but does it end there?
No. The CV department must ensure that your new CV is as you had requested which is why they conduct the final review.
“After we have sent you the CV you will go through it and give your feedback on whether there are things you want added or removed and whether or not your expectations were met. If your CV still needs more work, it is done again at no extra cost,” she says.

So Is A Professional CV Worth It?
To begin with, CV writing experts will always point out the mistakes that lead your CV to the reject pile. You could be qualified in accounting but because your CV just reads Business Commerce then an employer is confused on your specialization.
“Job seekers make all kinds of mistakes in their CV. Some are not sure what to start with so they end up having a CV that is either mixed up or that is not consistent. Others leave out important information all together,” says Brenda.
Another problem that seems to be common among job seekers is where work experience is included but only the company names are listed. There is no information of the position held or the duties and responsibilities or even achievements. Contacts also are left out, leaving no form of interaction.
To avoid these simple mistakes, Brenda says consulting with a professional on writing your CV would come in handy. This way you are able to identify where you are going wrong and can correct the mistakes by yourself or if need be, you can pay to have it done for you.
The Kenyan job market will only get tougher, be wise and have an upper hand to get the job.
