How I Landed A Promotion Four Months Into A New Job

Leah’s story…
I landed a job at a telesales company. Getting this job was the best thing that happened to me, especially because I had looked for a job for almost two years, with no success. I was just at the brink of giving up when someone advised me to try my luck in this company.
As luck would have it, I got called for a second interview and soon after was offered the job. I was ecstatic. Finally, I had this job that would pay my bills and enable me build relationships through networking.
Training for this job took about a month. In the month, I got to listen to stories of senior people in the company, and how they had all been in my shoes, at some point. It is their stories that made me aspire to be great. I knew I had to start where I was, and climb up the career ladder. Two weeks into the training, I made up my mind to be promoted as soon as a chance came by.

Starting out as a customer service representative posed its challenges. In as much as I got to learn during this process, I also wanted to quit. I was ready to take a risk in quitting and focus on my little business that I had neglected since joining the company.
I however did not quit because, in as much as I thought I had reached my end, I still wanted to push myself further.
On the fourth month, an opportunity came my way. There was an internal job vacancy that needed to be filled. I decided to again try my luck, and see how this would go. I had all the requirements and knew I would do well in what was expected of the candidate. The hurdle however, was that I was the only candidate who had a short tenure.
I went in for the first interview, progressed onto the second, and before I knew it, I was on my third interview which was conducted by stakeholders. That same evening, I got the great news that I had actually landed the job, making me the employee with the shortest tenure, ever land in such a position.
I discovered how easy it was for one to land a promotion.
And here’s how you too can do it…
1. Set and communicate career goals
Even before officially starting out in that company, I knew I was going to get promoted. My target was to be promoted as soon as a vacancy fell open. In the interview leading to the promotion, when asked where I saw myself in the next two years, I told the interviewer that I will be taking up their job. My goals were clearly set out and I knew what I wanted to achieve.
2. Always be a team player
I quickly realized that employers love team players. As a customer service representative, I ensured I was engaging with other representatives, to get ideas and collaborate on certain projects.
3. Possess a learner’s attitude
Employers need to see someone who is in a better position than they were when they were hired. Looking for ways to better yourself will therefore show that you are ready. Whenever I got an opportunity, I would always seek to learn what I did not know. Other times I would do the research on my own, and other times, I would ask. I believe this had a big role to play in the promotion I finally landed.
