Why You Didn’t Get The Job Even After Getting A Second Interview

Why You Didn’t Get The Job Even After Getting A Second Interview

By Michelle Wanjiku
Getting a call after attending the first interview for a second interview is something every job seeker wants.
Getting a second interview is not easy.  If you manage to get an invite, it means the employer actually went through your application and thought you have something to offer the organization.
But just because you were invited for another interview doesn’t mean you will get the job. You still have to do a lot in order to impress the employer further.
So why didn’t you get the job even after attending the second interview?
1. You were great, but someone else was better.
Sometimes it’s not about what you did or didn’t do. You are not the only one who will be interviewed for that position, and the employer wants to hire the best amongst all of you.
Therefore, you could miss out on an opportunity just because there was someone else who was more qualified than you.

Competition at the second interview stage is always the toughest because the company only picked the top candidates to interview a second time. You should, therefore, be ready to go up against people who are very qualified for the position.
2. You didn’t click
When it comes to hiring, employers usually look at more than just your CV. You could be the most qualified candidate and still miss out on a job because the interviewer didn’t think they could work with you.
It might seem unfair but one of the things an employer will look at is how you fit into the company culture. If they do not think you will be able to click with the rest of the team, they might choose to hire a less qualified person who will fit in well.
This means that you need to work on your interview skills in order to be able to make the interviewer picture working with you.
3. You were forgettable
Interviewers meet a lot of people in a day and after you leave the interview room someone else walks in. If you want to get a job, then you must ensure that you are not forgotten the moment someone else enters the room.
Your answers need to leave an impact with the employer which means avoiding vague and general answers and instead, using your answers to set yourself apart from other candidates.
After all, you cannot get the job if the interviewer cannot even remember your name a few minutes after your interview. People who are memorable for the right reasons always have a better chance of getting the job.

4. You were too focused on “what’s in it for me?”
Companies hire people because they need something, this means that as a candidate you need to know that your value comes from showing the employer how you will be of benefit to them.
It’s okay to have your own needs and wants but they should never be more prominent in an interview. When answering questions, you need to show how your knowledge and skills will benefit the company.
You can start talking about what you want in terms of salary and benefits after you are sure they are interested in you or after you have been offered the job.
Finally,
Most people think that getting an invite for a second interview means you have the job but one thing you need to remember is that you are not the only one invited to the interview and the employer is trying to see who among you they should choose.
This means striving to perform even better at this interview because you are competing with people the company already thinks can do the job especially when you consider the large number of people applying for the same positions you are.
