Ask A Recruiter: How Do I Get On A Recruiter’s Radar

“How do I ensure that I am someone recruiters think of when they are hiring?” Mary asked via email.

More and more organizations are choosing to use recruiting firms such as Corporate Staffing Services to fill vacancies. This means that if you want to improve your chances of getting a job, you need to ensure you have what these recruiters are looking for.

But how do you ensure that you are someone recruiters think of when they are looking to fill a position?

I talked to Cynthia Wangeci, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services and this is what she had to say.

1. Get Yourself There

First, is your CV up-to-date? If not, then this is something you need to start working on immediately. Remember that your CV is what a recruiter will use to determine whether or not to invite you for an interview.

This means that you need to ensure that it is well written and has your most recent qualifications and experience.

After updating your CV, share it with your network in order to increase your chances of receiving a referral.

In addition, you need to ensure that have a good LinkedIn profile. This can also ensure you don’t have to look for a job because you are being headhunted for positions you qualify for.

LinkedIn is a very important tool when it comes to your career. Having a profile will make you visible to companies looking to hire.

2. Reach out respectively

I receive so many emails from people who are looking for jobs on a daily basis; the problem is most of them don’t know how to go about asking for consideration.

For example, most of them just send their CV with no email subject or explanation as to what it is for and I never go through any of these CVs because of this.

As a job seeker, when you are reaching out to a recruiter you need to ensure that you are very clear about why you are reaching out. This means that your email subject should tell them why you are writing.

You should not expect them to guess why you are writing to them. If the email you send is professional, then your CV will be looked at.

3. Follow their job application instructions

Another common mistake people are applying for jobs is not following the instructions given in the job description.

When I am shortlisting and trying to see who I should invite for an interview, one of the first methods of elimination is seeing who followed application instructions and who didn’t.

If you never follow instructions then you can be sure that your application is never opened. This is because, if you cannot follow simple instructions when applying for the job, then I don’t trust you enough to follow instructions if you are hired.

4. Follow up like it is your job

Don’t be afraid to reach out and politely ask for an update. Because of the nature of the job, we deal with very many candidates spread out across different jobs a recruiter will likely forget about you if you never reach out to them.

You, however, have to ensure that you do it in a manner that will not become annoying. No one wants to receive a call daily from the same person asking about job opportunities.

As long as you remain respectful and understanding, making a follow up will ensure that recruiters remember who you are. Meaning when a position comes up that you qualify for, you will be considered.
