My Boss Is A Bully! She Always Insults Me And I Can’t Take It Anymore

We spend most of our time at work and so the environment should not be toxic, but what happens when your boss makes going to work hard for you but you still have bills to pay? Do you stay in a toxic environment or do you leave?

This is Lisa’s Story

“I recently got a job at a restaurant in Nairobi as a waiter; I have been working there for close to six months now. I was so happy to get the job because I had spent over two years looking for a job.

I like my job even though the pay is not very good and I also appreciate that I am gaining experience that will help me get a better job later on.

The first few weeks as I was learning the job, my supervisor was very nice and understanding and I thought I was lucky to find such a good work environment.

However, after working there for a few weeks my supervisor started becoming abusive. She cannot correct a mistake without insulting me.

I feel like there is a better way to tell someone when they make a mistake, I don’t see why she needs to insult and belittle people in the workplace.

At first, I didn’t really take what she said to heart but it is becoming more difficult as the days go by.

Her remarks are hurtful and they make me doubt my ability as a professional. I have noticed that she doesn’t do this to everyone and there are people she will talk to nicely even when she is reprimanding them.

I don’t have a problem with being reprimanded if I make a mistake, but I don’t think I should be insulted as a result.

It makes me really sad because I used to enjoy going to work but I now find myself dreading going to work.

I don’t think I am being paid enough to deal with being insulted every day but I also don’t have any other job lined up.

Is there a way I can make her stop or should I just accept the insults? I really don’t want to quit because I don’t want to lose my only source of income. What should I do? Kindly advise me.”
