My Supervisor Left & My Colleagues Blame Me For It. What Should I Do?

My Supervisor Left & My Colleagues Blame Me For It. What Should I Do?

The workplace is where we spend most of our time. While there, we interact with other colleagues and sometimes get to know them at a personal level. What happens when the colleague you thought was simply a joker turns against you? Do you simply ignore them and continue working, or do you quit?

Here is Mary’s story

About five months ago, I joined a company to take up the role of an assistant administrator. My supervisor, the administrative officer, was the one I reported to every day. She was in charge of training me and ensuring I settled in well. As she trained me, she would jokingly say: “You can never do that job as I can. You do not know your boss, at all. I’ve know him forever and it should be my job!” I did not take this seriously and decided to put all my focus on my job.

One of the things I realized as I closely worked with her was that she loved to gossip about individuals within the company. Any chance she got, she would ask me about one of our colleagues.

About a month ago, she decided to take this small talk a little further. She went behind my back to one of our colleagues who happened to be my friend. She later admitted to having told her something I had apparently said, which was not true.

This caught my colleague the wrong way. She came furiously storming to where I was and started abusing me. At the time, I did not know what had happened and was still trying to find out why she was acting this way.

All this time, my supervisor was not in her office to clarify what she had said. We eventually found her in one of my colleague’s office, and she still stuck to her story.

Our manager was made aware of what transpired and he called us to his office, just to listen to both versions of our stories. My supervisor decided to quit, and I was given a warning letter.

Since the incident, I keep getting stares from some of my colleagues who think I am the reason my supervisor left. A different supervisor was assigned to me, and she too directly asked what I had to do with my former supervisor’s dismissal.

I am confused because, in as much as I am uncomfortable in my place of work, I have not found another job. What is a better choice for me? To work at a place where people hate me, or to leave?
