Never Quit A Job Without First Doing This

By Perminus Wainaina

Do you often feel like you’re not growing in your career? Are you feeling unsatisfied at your current job? Do you feel like you want to drop everything and just quit?

There are several reasons why you could feel like you want to quit your job. Some of the common reasons include;

  • The job could be interfering with your mental health
  • You could be underperforming at your tasks
  • Strained relationship with a supervisor or the boss
  • The work could have become boring or unchallenging
  • You may have gotten a better opportunity elsewhere
  • The company’s culture may conflict with your values

James reached out to me through LinkedIn. He complained his employer was overworking him and had denied him a leave of absence. In his view, his being overworked had led to fatigue, and since he couldn’t get off days to rest, the only option he saw viable was to quit his job.

Like James, you too may be contemplating leaving your job. There are several reasons why you may feel like quitting. With the exception of the job interfering with your mental health, I believe the rest of the issues can be solved before finally resolving to quit.

After the conversation I had with James, I started thinking of things you should first do before quitting your job. Here are a few ideas you should give consideration to before calling it quits.

1. Have an objective assessment

Why do you want to quit your job? Can the issue be resolved?

Leaving your job should always be the last resolution. If there’s a way you can resolve the matter, do so first. I’m sure you know or have heard of someone who left their job only to regret it later.

Before you decide to leave, have an objective assessment. For example, you can talk to a third party who will help you put see matters in a different way.

Since you are in the middle of it, you might not have the most objective view. A fresh pair of eyes will help put matters in perspective.
