I have been applying for countless jobs for the last year but I still haven’t gotten a job. I feel like I qualify for the jobs I apply for and I have done what almost every career advice article says. Why I’m I not getting a job?

When looking for a job, there are very many things you could be doing that hurt your chances of actually getting a job.

1. The HR stalker

Every good job seeker knows that making a follow up is a good way to better your chances of getting a job. However, there is a limit to just how often you should call the interviewer or recruiter.

One very common mistake that you are probably making is calling the HR manager all the time. Keep in mind that a recruiter is a busy person and they are probably handling very many positions.

Therefore, you need to be considerate and don’t harass them with calls and emails all the time.

Calling and emailing all the time can put off the HR manager or recruiter and as such completely ruin your chances of getting a job.

So even if you do decide to make a follow-up, ensure you do it in a considerate way and don’t become annoying.

2. The mass CV sender

How many jobs have you applied for in the last three months?

Are you one of those people who apply for hundreds of positions without even considering your suitability for any of them?

Just because you applied for 50 positions doesn’t mean that you have a higher chance of getting a job. When it comes to job hunting, quality beats quantity.

It is better for you to make 10 quality applications for jobs you are suitable as opposed to applying for 50 jobs you don’t necessarily qualify for.

In order to have a successful job search, you need to be very intentional about the jobs you apply for, you also need to customize your CV and cover letter for every job you apply for but this won’t be possible if you apply for a 100 jobs.

3. The interview cliché generator

Do you find yourself attending a lot of interviews but never hear back from the interviewers? The problem could be what you say during the interview.

If you use phrases such as “willing to learn”, “I can multi-task” and other common clichés then this could be where the problem is.

Look at it this way, if you want to get the job, you need to be unique and stand out from all the other interviewees who are just as qualified as you.

You can’t do this if you use such generic phrases to describe yourself.

If you want to pass an interview, you need to start being genuine, unique and have proof that shows you are all these things without necessarily having to say it.

Instead of using these cliché terms, you should talk about your achievements that show you possess these skills.

4. The hook-me-up candidate

There is nothing wrong with asking your networks for help when it comes to finding a job. However, you need to remember that networking is a give and take.

Don’t be one of those people who expect help from people but are not willing to help others. People are more likely to help you if they know you will help them as well.

If you network properly, you will get recommendations for positions that you qualify for as well as get to learn about unadvertised positions which will improve your chances of getting a job.
