The Inclusive Climate Change Adaptation for a Sustainable Africa (ICCASA) is a nonprofit African based development organization committed to building resilience amongst communities through a gender-transformative approach. Together with Partners, ICCASA is works towards reducing gender inequalities through breakdown of deep-rooted gender stereotypes that impede progress towards greater parity. Headquartered in Nairobi Kenya, ICCASA has been working to advance inclusiveness and equity within the climate change space. Informed by extensive gender and climate change research and experience and deep local expertise, ICCASA work across Africa’s region addressing the following four overarching goals –

  • Building the resilience and enhancing adaptive capacity of women to climate chang
  • Building institutional capacity for equitable and inclusive governance of climate action
  • Expanding economic opportunities of women, youth, indigenous groups in a changing climate; and
  • Increasing adaptive capacity and environmental resilience of grassroot communities through capacity building, identifying gender responsible climate change adaptation options in agriculture, energy, water, forestry, infrastructure and manufacture

Position Description

ICCASA is seeking a Director to provide strategic, management, and technical leadership. We are looking for an expert who can continue growing ICCASA’s reputation for providing high quality and pioneering approaches to address issues of gender and inclusive development; bring thought leadership, management oversight, and innovative approaches to the work; and represent ICCASA to donors, partners, and grassroot communities. ICCASA Director will have responsibility at multiple levels – as individual Technical contributor, as Leader of staff, and jointly as a Member of ICCASA Board Management Team.

The position is based at ICCASA headquarters offices in Nairobi Kenya.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Management

  • Provide strategic planning, organization, and direction to all ICCASA work
  • Build networks and partnerships for innovations across governments, public and private sectors, CSOs and NGOs
  • Provide high-level leadership and corporate oversight for all activities, contracts, and staff to ensure donor and partner satisfaction, and budget management and accountability
  • Publish and present significant work in relevant journals, in different outlets, conferences etc
  • Lead and/or contribute to developing strategy for proposals related to gender equality, inclusive climate change adaptation, and sustainable development

Personnel Management

  • Ensure staff and individual performance through technical mentoring, setting objectives and standards, and supervision
  • Strategically leverage the strength and knowledge of staff to determine how to best meet the needs of ICCASA and the various partners
  • Foster an appreciative work culture, with collaboration and teamwork for knowledge sharing and learning

Support to ICCASA Board

  • Support Resource mobilization through developing and responding to strategic fundraising opportunities
  • Ensure regular, open and inclusive communication, and integrate expertise, knowledge, and support throughout the organization.

Position Requirements

Minimum Academic Qualifications and Years of Experience

  • PhD and 8 years of relevant experience or Master’s degree and 15 years of relevant experience
  • Graduate degree in international development, organizational development, social sciences, or a related field

Experience and Skills

  • Well-developed professional networks and recognized thought leader in the field of gender, climate change and inclusive sustainable development
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing (proposals, reports, and other communications) and public speaking
  • Experience working in multiple sectors and in both national, regional and international settings
  • Ability to work sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective working relations with national governments, donors, private sector, CBOs and NGOs as well as staff
  • Deep commitment to gender issues and practical knowledge of interventions to address gender inequality in climate change adaptation
  • Experience managing programs in a country office
  • Flexibility and ability to travel frequently

Technical and Management Qualifications

  • Strong technical expertise in gender analysis, gender integration/mainstreaming approaches and climate change adaptation
  • Excellent team building and interpersonal communications skills and successful experience in managing and motivating diverse teams of staff
  • Strong strategic planning, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop and manage partner relationships

This position will be offered on a two-year renewable basis. A six month probationary period will apply.
