5 Proven Ways To Advance Your HR Career

My 10-year career includes various HR roles, up to the director. During this time, I received training on HR processes; counseling employees; and practicing good management by applying laws, handbooks, and policies and procedures. My graduate HR classes also focused on employees and management, applying laws, and other technical aspects of the work.

Through this time I have made major milestones while advancing my HR career. The journey has never been easy and at some point in my career, I felt like giving up because I stagnated in the same role. My salary was never increased and the colleagues who were working in different companies had already achieved their goals.

With time I learned that moving forward in your HR career requires you to set achievable goals, build relevant skills, bolster your network and take steps that will set yourself apart.

So, how can you go about this? Here are five proven ways to advance your career.

1. Boost your education

One of the best things you can do to grow your career is to focus on your education. I enrolled in an HR short course, which provided me with the specific skills i needed to succeed; including advanced finance and business analysis.

It also set me up to become an expert in my field, ensuring i understood the modern business environment and how to offer support for all those working within it.

2. Surround yourself with the right people

As in any profession, the people you make connections with matter. If you’re just starting out in HR, surround yourself with the right people. Well-connected mentors and experienced peers helped me set on the right course for career development.

Consider seeking out job-shadowing opportunities to meet more professionals who are working in your area of interest.

When seeking out a mentor, look for people who you respect and feel comfortable going to for advice. You can also proactively search platforms like LinkedIn or dedicated mentoring services.

3. Seek New Opportunities

I took a role early in my career that allowed me not only to take on new challenges in HR but to participate in running the business as a whole.

But the most impactful thing I’ve done was to take a three-month work assignment in UK. That experience expanded my ability to work and think globally far more than any class or training, or even managing from a distance, could have. I instantly gained credibility as a global HR practitioner and elevated my focus during a subsequent job search to the executive level.

4. Determine to Achieve More

In my current and previous HR positions, I have focused on turning the organizations into award-winning employers of choice.

Focusing on the organization and the job at hand is a win for the organization that also opens doors to new professional opportunities. Being able to show tangible, measurable results is the best way to advance your HR career.

5. Look For New Opportunities

It is said that if you can’t create an opportunity, then look for one. Look for job opportunities on social media; visit the companies’ websites, be part of HR events, or even volunteer.

Finally…

Career development is crucial for everyone who wants to excel in life and set a benchmark for others. You must have self-discipline, step out of your comfort zone, network and read widely to advance your career in HR. Making these tips your core principles will help you become a successful HR professional, regardless of where you work or your qualification levels.
