Should I Apply for a Job if I’m Overqualified

You look at a job description before applying and realize that you are 100% capable of doing all of the requirements — plus more. However, you still want to apply as an overqualified candidate. Do you have a chance? What will the hiring manager think?

When deciding whether you should consider applying for a job when you’re overqualified, the best advice is to be objective and keep an open mind. For most job seekers, there’s no easy answer. While the decision should be based on your career goals, many candidates let emotional factors, such as pride, greed or fear, cloud their judgment.

You might also have valid reasons for choosing a lower-level job, such as wanting to transition to a new career or seeking more purpose or fulfillment from your work. Today’s workforce as a whole is more concerned with job satisfaction than hierarchy. Candidates want to live the life they want and have a career they are at ease in.

Follow along for how to best prepare and what to expect when you’re overqualified for a job.
