Being a project manager, as the title goes, means being involved in a number of projects. So here we go; I was once in charge of a project that was launching a new product in our organization. I had a talented team, a budget to adhere to, and a looming deadline. I was confident about delivering the project successfully to meet stakeholder expectations. However, challenges like scope creep, schedule delays, cost overruns, quality issues, communication gaps, and stakeholder conflicts arose. Unfortunately, I did not know how to manage these challenges and ensure timely project completion within the budgeted time.
Since this was always recurring, I decided to join a project management class to enhance my project management skills.
Let me take you through some of the tips you need to grow your project management skills that have helped me through my project management journey.
1. Learn the basics of project management
For you to grow your project management skills, consider enrolling in online courses or reading industry articles in your spare time. Joining professional associations is also beneficial for networking and learning from other project managers. Self-study and exposure to project management practices can significantly enhance your ability to manage projects effectively.
2. Apply project management tools and techniques
Software, templates, and online platforms help organize documentation and ensure everyone stays aligned. Tips to grow your project management skills include utilizing digital tools to create, update, and share key documents efficiently. Online project boards are particularly useful for visualizing tasks, dependencies, and the critical path, allowing you to customize your approach to fit team needs. Essential tools like project charters, scope documents, work breakdown structures, risk assessments, stakeholder maps, and status updates set expectations and monitor progress.
