The 5 P’S Of Public Speaking
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, and to compel.”
If you’ve ever had the chance to do public speaking, you know how challenging it can be, the nervousness and anxiety, and suddenly, all the great things you wanted to say disappear from your mind.
I know most of us have this imagination of giving this perfect speech that keeps people listening and inspired. But the fear of messing up or forgetting what to say can make us want to run in the opposite direction. But do you know you can overcome that fear? With the right preparation and some practice, you can stand in front of a crowd and speak with confidence.
Just the other day, I was having a conversation with my colleague Alex about moving audiences with great speeches.
“I used to get so nervous when I was asked to give a speech”, said Alex.
“You recently gave a powerful speech at the conference. How did you manage to do that?” I asked him.
He said, “It’s all thanks to something a public speaking coach once taught me—the 5 P’s of public speaking. They changed the game for me.”
Here’s what Alex shared on the 5 P’s of Public Speaking:
1. Planning
Having a good speech doesn’t just happen. You need to plan. Think about what you want to say and how to say it in a way that makes sense to your audience. Start with a strong opening, explain your points clearly in the middle, and end with a powerful conclusion. This allows you to stage and craft a presentation that is creatively engaging, entertaining, and informative.
Tell your audience what you’re going to tell them, tell it to them, and then summarize what you’ve told them. It’s just like telling a story—beginning, middle, and end.
2. Preparation
Don’t just write your speech and leave it at that. Get to know your audience. Think about the event, the setting, and what people expect. Make an outline of the key points you want to cover, and practice saying them out loud.
You can also ask a friend to listen and give you feedback, or think ahead about what questions you might be asked.

3. Passion
Speak about something you care about. When you’re passionate, people can feel it—it shows in your voice, your energy, and your message. Passion is what makes a speech truly powerful.
Look at someone like Barack Obama. Part of what made him such a great speaker was that he truly believed in what he was saying.
4. Practice
This one’s simple: the more you practice, the better you get. Don’t just read your speech once or twice. Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, or ask a friend to watch. Try it out in different ways until it feels natural.
As Alex said, “Practice helped me feel confident. I knew my material inside and out, and that made all the difference.”
5. Performance
When it’s time to speak, it’s all about how you show up. Make eye contact, smile, breathe deeply, and be yourself. You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to be real.
Positive thinking helps, too. If you believe you’ll do well, you’re already halfway there.
Conclusion
When you understand and apply the 5 P’s of Public Speaking—Planning, Preparation, Passion, Practice, and Performance—you can go from being a nervous speaker to someone who inspires and connects with others.
Just like Alex, you can turn your fear into confidence.
