Job Purpose
The Datacenter Power and Mechanical Systems Manager is responsible for the operation, maintenance, capacity planning, and reliability of all critical power and mechanical infrastructure within the datacenter. This includes utility power feeds, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, PDUs, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, containment systems, and environmental controls. The role ensures the resilience and optimal performance of all mechanical and electrical systems, supporting continuous availability and compliance with regulatory and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
Power Infrastructure Management
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of all electrical infrastructure including utility feeds, switchgear, generators, ATS/STS systems, UPS systems, and power distribution networks (MDBs, SDBs, PDUs, rPDUs).
- Monitor power systems for capacity, load balance, and redundancy, ensuring adherence to Tier III/IV design principles.
- Coordinate planned maintenance and testing (e.g., generator load tests, UPS battery autonomy tests) to minimize operational risk.
- Manage fault response and escalation for power-related incidents, ensuring timely restoration and root cause analysis.
Mechanical & Cooling Systems Management
- Manage HVAC and mechanical systems including CRAC/CRAH units, condensers, in-row coolers, and containment systems.
- Optimize cooling performance through airflow management, temperature/humidity control, and system tuning to improve energy efficiency.
- Supervise maintenance and emergency repairs on mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with OEM standards and preventive maintenance schedules.
Preventive Maintenance & Reliability
- Own the preventive and corrective maintenance calendar for all power and mechanical systems.
- Supervise vendor activities and ensure adherence to safety, quality, and operational procedures.
- Conduct system redundancy and failover testing to verify resilience under various operating scenarios.
- Maintain detailed maintenance records, test reports, and system performance data for audits and reviews.
Capacity Planning & Projects
- Analyze and forecast power and cooling capacity utilization, identifying headroom and upgrade requirements.
- Provide technical input for datacenter expansion, technology refresh, or sustainability projects (e.g., containment retrofits, solar integration, UPS upgrades).
- Work closely with internal teams and external contractors to plan and execute infrastructure projects with minimal operational impact.
Compliance, Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate single-line diagrams, mechanical schematics, asset inventories, and operation manuals.
- Ensure all systems and procedures comply with regulatory standards, internal policies, and Uptime Institute/ISO requirements.
- Produce regular reports on system performance, incidents, capacity utilization, energy efficiency (PUE), and maintenance KPIs.
- Support audits and inspections by providing accurate and complete technical documentation.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field.
- 3-5 years work experience
- Hands-on experience with power distribution systems, UPS/generator operations, HVAC systems, and maintenance planning.Relevant certifications such as CDCP/CDCS, Uptime ATS/ATD, or OEM vendor certifications are an advantage.
- Proven track record in reliability engineering, preventive maintenance, and capacity planning.In-depth knowledge of low-voltage power distribution, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, and power quality management.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, airflow management, and mechanical plant operations.
- Familiarity with BMS/DCIM platforms for monitoring and alarm management.
- Awareness of Tier III/IV datacenter design standards, energy efficiency principles, and relevant regulatory codes.
