Job Purpose

The Quality Improvement Officer will play a vital role in fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous learning across the hospital. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will design and implement strategies to enhance the hospital’s operational and clinical performance. The position focuses on ensuring that all departments uphold established quality standards, comply with accreditation requirements, and maintain patient safety as a top priority.

The individual will also serve as a key resource for developing, communicating, and maintaining quality assurance processes that promote the hospital’s long-term sustainability and patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Quality Improvement Officer will span several areas, including quality assurance, continuous improvement, leadership, and collaboration.

Quality Assurance and Control

  • Participate in the periodic review and revision of the hospital’s quality and patient safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure they align with current standards and best practices.
  • Provide guidance on the interpretation and implementation of the hospital’s quality and patient safety framework, ensuring that departments adhere to approved policies and processes.
  • Facilitate regular training sessions to build staff capacity on quality assurance, patient safety, and compliance with national and international healthcare standards.
  • Conduct internal quality audits across various departments to assess adherence to established procedures, identify gaps, and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of corrective and preventive action plans to address identified non-conformities or audit findings.
  • Review certification, accreditation, and regulatory agency audit results and support departments in preparing comprehensive responses and improvement plans.
  • Lead the collection, analysis, and presentation of data that supports decision-making for quality and patient safety performance.

Continuous Quality Improvement

  • Lead root cause analyses (RCA) for sentinel and adverse events to identify systemic weaknesses and guide preventive measures.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement within the hospital’s clinical and administrative processes, ensuring that lessons learned are translated into actionable quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support departmental teams in establishing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities that promote measurable enhancements in service delivery.
  • Collaborate with department heads to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to quality and patient safety, ensuring that these are effectively tracked and reported.
  • Maintain and update the hospital’s database on CQI activities, providing evidence-based insights for management and decision-making.
  • Promote the integration of quality improvement principles into daily hospital operations through continuous staff engagement and training.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Foster a culture that prioritizes patient safety, accountability, and quality service delivery through leadership, motivation, and mentorship.
  • Partner with department leaders, clinicians, and other staff members to implement and sustain quality improvement projects across various hospital units.
  • Provide ongoing education and mentorship to staff on quality management principles, data utilization, and compliance with healthcare standards.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, ensuring that quality and patient safety remain central to the hospital’s strategic discussions.
  • Coordinate the communication of quality initiatives, outcomes, and lessons learned across all hospital departments to maintain transparency and consistency.
  • Offer technical advice on quality-related issues and collaborate with external partners and regulators where necessary to ensure compliance with health sector standards.
  • Undertake any other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer in line with the hospital’s goals and operational priorities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Diploma in a medical-related course such as Nursing, Medical or Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Health Systems Management, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in Quality Management Systems is highly desirable.
  • Valid practicing license for clinical professionals, where applicable.
  • Certification or training in Quality Management, Patient Safety, or Quality Improvement tools and methodologies is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a healthcare quality improvement role, ideally within a hospital or healthcare institution.
  • Experience working with accreditation or certification standards such as SafeCare or ISO and implementing CQI projects is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and data literacy skills with the ability to collect, interpret, and utilize data for decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to engage, train, and mentor staff at all levels.
