Theatre Nurse (1 Position)

Matibabu Foundation is a registered health facility and community health organization based in Siaya County, Kenya. Our mandate is to improve the quality, affordability, and accessibility of healthcare, with a particular focus on women, children, and families. We achieve this through integrated facility-based care, outreach programmes, laboratory, and pharmaceutical services.
Job Purpose
The Theatre Nurse will be responsible for promoting and maintaining high standards of professional nursing care by delivering quality perioperative services, with a strong focus on surgical patient care.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess patient status, review medical records, verify patient identity, and confirm surgical site
- Ensure patient comfort and provide psychological support
- Maintain a sterile and safe operating environment (aseptic technique)
- Participate in sterilization, packaging, and dispatch of theatre consumables
- Assist in managing patient flow within the theatre department
- Act as a scrub nurse during surgical procedures
- Assist in patient positioning, transfer, and post-operative recovery
- Monitor and document vital signs before, during, and after surgery
- Ensure accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts
- Administer prescribed medications, fluids, and blood products
- Monitor intraoperative blood/fluid loss and patient responses
- Assist anesthetists during induction and procedures
- Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, and ward staff
- Document all intraoperative events and patient responses
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and reporting of theatre equipment
- Manage surgical supplies (consumable and non-consumable)
- Ensure accurate billing for procedures and consumables used
- Provide care for newborns during cesarean sections
- Perform any other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications and Requirements
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a recognized institution
- Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing (added advantage)
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in perioperative nursing
- Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (added advantage)
- Experience in laparoscopy (added advantage)
