How to Answer, “How do you handle feedback?” in an Interview

Have you ever gotten feedback that caught you off guard?  At that moment I guess you were thinking everything was fine, only to discover there were things which you could get better. How did that make you feel? A little uncomfortable, right?

We’ve all had this experience. Imagine something that you put a lot of effort into requires changes, it will definitely make you feel some type of way. But here’s the thing, feedback is not intended to bring you down or criticize you. It’s meant to help you grow and improve your work.

So, how do you show in an interview that you accept feedback well? First, you talk about how you stay calm and not get angry instantly. The first thought is to be defensive, but the secret is not to let the feelings get the better of you.

In an interview, you can say to the interviewer that you welcome feedback with an open mind. You see it as an opportunity to learn something new and get better at work.

You could provide an instance of how you found out it was an opportunity to be better. For example, share a story where a manager pointed out something that could be improved in your work.

Maybe it was about being clearer in meetings or being more organized with your tasks. Talk about how you took it as an opportunity to do better. This will show that you can take criticism positively.

One of the ways you can demonstrate that you are comfortable with feedback is by describing how you ask for clarifications. For example, when your supervisor tells you to correct your communication, you might explain that you asked for specific examples. This shows that you’re open to improvement and want to know exactly what needs to be improved. Having exactly what you need to improve on makes it possible for you to correct it.

Once you’ve learned the feedback, describe how you take action. Describe how the feedback helped you improve and how it contributed to your overall success.

And don’t forget to mention that you actually seek out feedback from time to time. In an interview, you can talk about how regularly seek feedback to help you remain on track.
