Choose your goal below:
Preparing for a job interview can bring about nervousness, excitement and doubt. Many people feel they need to be perfect and have all the answers ready to make a lasting impression. Here’s the truth confidence before an interview isn’t about being perfect it’s about believing in yourself that you have what it takes.
A client walked into our offices a few days before his interview for a position he wanted. He had all the qualifications for the role, the skills, experience, and education needed. However, despite being well-prepared, he struggled with his confidence.
He mentioned that he had spent weeks preparing for the interview. First, he had researched the company, practised his answers and felt he had all the knowledge at his fingertips.
However, he was still worried that he could not stand out. Many of us have experienced this feeling of uncertainty. Even when we feel we are well prepared, we are afraid that they will not be quite good or that we will make mistakes.
The reality is that no one expects perfection during interviews. Interviews are more interested in seeing how a candidate handles pressure and how they fit with the company’s values and culture.
The advice given to the client by one of our interview coaching experts was simple.: it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous before an interview, and the key to confidence lies in being yourself.
Interviews are more about showing that a candidate is a problem solver and brings much more to the table. When asked a question you have no idea about, it’s okay, and sometimes even impressive, to be straightforward and say, “You know, I’m not immediately familiar with that, I’ll research the information needed to address that issue.”
This shows your problem-solving ability and willingness to learn. He was advised to take a breather, calm his mind and remind himself of his strengths. This technique can help reduce nervousness and allows you to approach the interview with more confidence.
A few days later, he shared the exciting news, he had gotten the job. This experience highlights an important lesson, confidence before a job interview isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up and trusting yourself,
As you ponder on these tips remember success is just around the corner, be confident! If you are facing any challenges in your interview preparation our interview coaching experts are here to help!
