How to Impress in the First 30 Seconds of an Interview

Picture this, you’re in an interview, anxious, but you’re sure you’ve prepared. Now you only have one opportunity to make a lasting first impression. But how do you do it in the first 30 seconds?
Emma, a marketing manager, came in for interview coaching services because she had problems with confidence during her interviews.
One of our interview coaching experts, Mary Amondo, took her through critical areas including body language, answering common interview questions and how to start the interview confidently.
On the day of the interview, Emma did everything as practiced, and upon completion of the interview, she called us to inform us about how it went. She told us that she felt confident, calm, and the interviewer was impressed from the start.
Fast forward, she was offered a job. Therefore, what did she do so that she made a good first impression?
1. Start with Confidence
The very first thing that you need to do if you want to impress is to believe in yourself. Walk into the room upright, make eye contact and provide a firm hand shake.
These small details show that you’re prepared and in charge. Even though you’re nervous inside, remain calm outside. Confidence is not faking to be perfect; it is showing you’re in charge and prepared to get the job done.
2. Answer the “Tell Me About Yourself” Question
Most interviews start with “Tell me about yourself.” The question sounds simple but most people often answer by reading what’s on their CV or dwelling too much on their own life.
Talk about your experience, strengths and interests in relation to the job. For example, you could say, “I have 4 years of marketing experience, and I enjoy social media work, and I am particularly interested in helping your business develop its online presence.”
3. Show Enthusiasm
When you talk about the job or the company, be enthusiastic! You might say, “I’ve been following your company for a long time and really like what you’re doing with sustainability.” This will show that you did your research and are willing to become part of their company.
4. Make a Connection
Another important tip is to look for something you have in common with the interviewer. You don’t have to find out much, perhaps you both have the same interest or passion for the company.
After finding out the common interests, the interview will feel more like a conversation, and you will probably feel comfortable and be yourself.
