Brief Role Description
Clinical Sessions – Patient Management
- To provide health care to patients and continuously evaluate and improve the quality of care provided to meet patient management goals. The overall responsibility will be restoration of a patient’s optimum health.
- Perform health assessments, run diagnostic tests, prescribe medication, create treatment plans and provide health and wellness advice to patients.
Assess Patients’ Conditions
- Evaluate patients who have illnesses or injuries, this would involve ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting the results of these tests to determine what illness a patient has or the extent of a specific injury, such as a broken bone or concussion. Thereafter discuss test finding with patients.
Create Treatment Plans
- Once a diagnosis has been made, prescribe medication or treatment plans to address the patient’s condition.
- Determine the course of treatment, such as how much medication should be taken over a prescribed amount of time or how long an injured limb should be rested or placed in a cast.
- Arrange for as many follow-up visits as they deem necessary to restore the patient to full health.
- Make referrals for patients whom cannot be treated at the facility and / or are in need of specialized care.
Perform Routine Physicals
- See patients who are not ill or injured but who are seeking to maintain their current level of health.
- Conduct routine physical exams that would include vitals, reviewing patient history, discussing any health concerns of the patient and instructing patients on proper diet and exercise habits.
- Assess patients consistently by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies and creating and implementing a patient management plan.
General Duties And Responsibilities
- Monitor patients’ progress on a regular basis.
- Hold Health clinics on a weekly basis, including participating in regular corporate talks.
- Involve patients and carers in the patient management plan.
- Educate patients on wellness, prevention and early detection.
- To inform patients, family members/care givers on where to find materials and resources to use/reference in aid of recovery.
- Initiate timely referrals to relevant consultants and departments to arrive at the best treatment plan for specialized cases.
- In the area of women’s health, carry out medical gynecology, family planning and antenatal care within areas of competence.
- Work within the ethical framework of the Kenya Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, Code of Professional Ethics.
- Undertake an annual appraisal covering both clinical and management responsibilities.
To set up a framework and systems to allow continuous improvement in the clinical standards at the Pharmacies; in order to ensure quality and safe patient care, motivate and empower staff, ensure patient satisfaction and improve collaborative relationships within the organization.
Aspects of Clinical Governance to be addressed include
- Clinical Risk Reduction – identifying areas of clinical risk to patients and staff and implementing strategies to reduce these.
- Clinical Audit – undertaking clinical audit of doctors’ charts and other clinical areas as deemed necessary.
- Clinical Effectiveness – ensuring the use of evidence – based medicine and guidelines, to create best practice protocols for common medical conditions and nursing procedures and where appropriate initiate new services at the clinics.
- Continuous Education – medical, nursing, laboratory and pharmacy education and training, including case review, peer learning, clinical meetings including multidisciplinary meetings (laboratory, nurse, pharmacy, doctor, reception staff).
- Research – ensuring the clinics are involved in research activities.
- Annual Appraisal of medical officers and nursing staff.
- Ensuring all Pharmaceutical outlets have the correct clinical skill mix. Involvement in recruiting clinical staff and conducting interviews.
- Obtaining patient and carer feedback, over-time patient participation and support groups could be set up.
- Ensuring that there is adequate support to the clinic staff from specialists at other institutions in East Africa. Ensuring that referral pathways to specialists in and outside Kenya are clear and easy to access.
Essential and Desirables skills
- Bachelor of medicine or Bachelor of surgery (MBchB)
- At least 2 years’ experience in a busy outpatient hospital setup
- Registration with the Medical Board
- Must have completed 1year internship
- Training in BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Computer literate
- Ability to work under pressure and willingness to work odd hours
- Good team player with good interpersonal skills
- Willingness to take up leadership responsibilities
- Proven leadership and performance management skills
- Commercially focused
- Approachable and friendly
- Enthusiastic and willing to learn
- Ability to work in other Pharmaceutical outlets, when requested, to cover for sickness/holidays & to gain additional experience.
- Regular attendance at conference calls, business meetings and appropriate training sessions on- and off-site, when required.
