Former NTV Anchor Lizz Ntonjira Opens Up About Her Career & Success Tips

When Elizabeth Ntonjira (better known as Lizz) bid goodbye to her anchoring job at Nation Media Group last year, it was with a gratitude filled Facebook update.

She wrote, “After working at NTV for the past three years and three months, I feel so blessed and privileged to land a job where my career path has always been geared to…… I cannot ask for more. It’s been an absolute pleasure working for the biggest media house in east and central Africa. I have learnt a lot, the experience has been eye opening in all aspects…..”

What has she been up to you ask? Speaking to True Love Magazine (March’s issue) she reveals that she is now the Head of Communications Department at The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK)

The 27 years old says that, “My work involves going through all the newspapers to find articles that mention CAK directly or indirectly.” She also adds that she liaises with universities and various stakeholders.

“I enjoy my job. I learn something new every day and meet people who have a positive impact on me and challenge me to work even harder,” she confesses.

Something interesting though is her tenacity in making it big in her career life. “Some people think I’m over ambitious but I tell them I know where I am headed and I have my 10 year plan with me.” She cements this by saying that, “I moved out of home at 21 and bought my first car at 22.” And her secret to this she says is, “I achieved that because I compared myself to people who mentored me.

And what is her advice to you if you want to be successful in your line of work? “Be ready to take risks. I took a risk and resigned from a permanent and pensionable job to take up a three year contract because after assessing my plans, the latter offered me the opportunity to actualize my long term goals.”

She also shares that you have to outline your short term and long term goals by trying to identify your biggest strengths to help you propel your career while you take time to listen to your mentors. “Periodically review what you have accomplished and see what is stopping you from actualizing your full potential,” she says.

Curiously, how does she spend her money? She says, “The first thing I do is pay my bills, rent, nanny, house shopping and electricity.”

As a caring mom of one she says, “I have a standing order that diverts money to my Son’s account and my Sacco savings account.” With the advice from her banker she says she receives advice on investment opportunities.

Bonus Tip From Lizz: “Do not compare yourself with your peers, or you will never get far because you are most likely at the same level. Pick mentors to compare yourself to people 10 years older than yourself and look at their achievements. Then tell yourself how awesome it would be to achieve what they have at your age.”
