KTN’s Ali Manzu Talks About His Successful Rise To The Top & How It All Started

On his Twitter account, he defines himself as a News Anchor/Reporter who is passionate for wildlife conservation and a man who loves God and humanity.

Over the years we’ve watched him bring us 7.00 o’clock news at KTN with an impeccable Swahili which most of us can only dream of. In an interesting interview back in January with The Standard, the news anchor revealed before coming to Nairobi in 2003 he had been warned to be very careful of Nairobi.

“My mother cautioned me about talking to strangers.” He talks of how on the day of the journey her mother packed him potato chips and eggs in a lunch box and told me. “I remember sitting in the bus at Mtito Wa Ndei enjoying my home cooked food as the rest, probably Nairobians traveling from Mombasa, stepped out to eat at the restaurants,” he shared.

But it’s his interview with the recent copy of True Love Magazine which tells more of his journey to be who he is today. “I studied Architectural draughtsmanship at the Technical University College in Mombasa, before changing to mass communication,” he tells the magazine.

But when and where did his career in media begin? He reveals that it all began back in Mombasa’s radio Radio Rhama. He talks of how a female colleague encouraged him to follow his dreams. “I said to myself I could be the best Swahili anchor and reporter,” he says adding that he also tried doing stories in English but his managers advised him to concentrate on what he is good at.

While he looks up to people like Linus Kaikai and Faridah Karoney, he says these people helped him along the journey. “They know what they are doing and can shape you to become who you want to be in the industry.” He adds that they also taught him how to write a story, present live shows both on radio and television and how to manage himself.

As a man close to his spirituality, he shares that he reads the Quran every morning because he is inspired by its teachings. Funnily though, he reveals that he gets most of his story ideas when he is in the toilet!

But there are things he would like to do before he kicks it. You know…. his bucket list. So what’s in it? He says he has to achieve his goals in life among them being finishing his communication degree and for his career dreams he says, “Become a foreign affairs specialist working somewhere in the United Nations or the civil service.”

Inspiring, don’t you think?
