CV Writing Tips: What to Include On The Educational Section & Get The Job

By Jane Okoth,
Whether you are a recent graduate or experienced in the job market, you can use your educational qualification in your CV to outshine your competition.

The educational experience is one of the most important key sections in your CV that might make it noticeable.

Which is the best way to present your education so that you are able to sell yourself effectively?

Speaking to Florence Mukunya, a Career Advisor at Corporate Staffing Services, she advises one to leave out the least educational requirements in the CV.

“For instance if the job specification demands that you possess a Masters and you have it, you don’t need to include your primary and secondary school details.

Also make list your educational qualification from the most recent and most relevant one first,” she says.

She also stresses the need to give full detailed information on the educational achievements.

“You must include the Certification, the Institution which you studied, and also the date of completion.

Ms Mukunya also pinpoints the fact that you scored so well in your college or university grade does not guarantee you automatic qualification for the job.

For people with more than 5 years of experience in the job market, does the experience put them at a better position when applying for a job?

“The education part has to be indicated on the CV as the experience does not matter even if you have 10 plus years as the employer will need to see the certification first. It could be the candidate is not qualified and this is also another way of weeding out professional quacks” she advocates.

How important is the name of the institution which you studied?

“Some institutions are well known to produce people who are best qualified in a certain field and is also a way of the employer finding out if you studied in a reputable one.

For fresh graduates, Ms Mukunya advises that putting all your relevant educational details is the only way the employer is going to see that you have a background of the position you are applying for.

“However, if you feel that you need to add more information, you can highlight the education section in your CV by indicating other achievements like extracurricular activities in the work experience segment” she adds.

On her parting shot, ,Ms Mukunya says that a CV should not contain educational details about everything you have done but what is more relevant to the job.

“Don’t include irrelevant educational qualification information. If for instance you decided to change your profession from Nursing to

Accounting and found your niche in accounting, include the nursing qualification in the CV but do not give it prominence,” she says.

“Similarly, don’t assume any insignificant information that may catch the eyes of the recruiter. A small qualification that you had whether it is a certificate and relevant to the job specification, always remember to include it,” she concludes.
