Dressing For Casual Friday.. 4 Types Of Clothing Kenyans MUST Avoid

By Jane Okoth,

“I know that most employers allow their workers to dress in casual smart outfits. However I am a new employee in a medium sized company and was a bit confused on what I should and shouldn’t don on Fridays,” asks Patience Maundu in an email.

The weekend is finally here and for most people, this is deemed as the perfect time to loosen up.

Speaking to Kennedy Munyendo, a Client Service Officer at Corporate Staffing Services, he advises that casual wear must be approached with caution.

“As much as you are loosening up, it has to be decent because Friday is a normal working day,” he says.

Mr Munyendo warns against resorting to wearing anything that is too formal just because it is end of week.

So what are types of clothing that Kenyans need to avoid at all costs on Fridays?

“To begin with, I am very against the wearing of sandals and coming with them to work. What happens if you were to attend a meeting with an important client?” he asks.

Instead of wearing sandals, he suggests wearing of flats or loafers, or any type of footwear that is closed.

“Secondly, avoid wearing attires such as tracksuits to work,” he states.

He adds that “These are clothing that would make you comfortable at home but not in the workplace. Specifically mentioning the men, tracksuits need to be kept away from the workplace.”

Thirdly, Mr. Munyendo points out that female employees to avoid wearing revealing clothes to the workplace.

“Don’t go overboard and wear appealing clothes which in result may end up being provocative to your workmates,” cautions Mr Munyendo.

Fourthly he advocates for inappropriate clothing at work.

“It is okay to wear jeans on a Friday but make sure it reflects professionalism. You will find some with a lot of funny work of arts that can people appear out of place,” he opines.

He adds that, “There are some cheeky employees who go to the extent of wearing Tshirts to signify their political affiliations.”

“It’s also important to note that how you dress on Friday depends with the culture of the organization you are working for. If it is a big corporate firm, then you might need to handle it with a lot of care,” he explains.
