Working for an NGO is a dream that most job seekers long might come true someday. And I know it has been yours for some time.
However, unlike other jobs, NGO jobs come with their own demands. That’s why we have been getting questions like do I need a degree to get an NGO Job?
Do I need to speak different languages like French, Chinese or Portuguese? Do I need to volunteer first? What experience do I need?

The truth is that there is no single route of entry into this NGO sector.
You will find people from various backgrounds like accounting, communication, agriculture or even mathematics finding their employment slots in these none-governmental- organizations.
So What Do You Need To Know Before You Send That Application?
1. This is job like any other
Landing a new job at an NGO can be a very competitive activity in Kenya today.
However, you need to keep in mind that even a non-governmental organization works more or less like every other organization you’ve applied to.
So be careful to note that securing a job in an NGO is as competitive and just like any other jobs you might have applied for before, it is your skills, knowledge and experience that will determine whether you can get your foot on that first step of the ladder or not.
So prepare you application details well and apply for the job just like you would apply for any other.
2. Use your cover letter to address the Job description
Your cover letter is your best chance to explain why you’re the one they should consider for that NGO Job interview.
Never feel tempted to sell yourself short.
Even if you don’t meet all the selection criteria, if you can produce a convincing cover letter that explains what you can offer to the company, then you will likely secure that interview.
Start the cover letter by addressing this simple question: Why should this organization hire me and not the elegant gentlemen that will come for the same interview?
Go back to the job description and show how through your experience you have strong communication skills, good organizational skills or whatever it is the company is looking for. Sell your skills well!
3. Now bring in your volunteer or community work experience
Most NGOs in Kenya work to better the community as opposed to making money.
So if you have volunteered some time back for community work or anything that is related to the community, this is your best chance to shine.
It could be as simple as working in a children’s home or organizing a fundraiser, however this all goes a long way in showing a hiring manager that you have a genuine interest in community development.
4. Finally prepare yourself to a Panel/One on one interview
Most NGOs will use panels to interview people they want to bring on board. This is because they have to reach an agreement and everyone needs to be involved. However other still use a one on one interview.
If you are that person who sweats in panel interviews, then this will be the best time to prepare your interview skills, calm down your nerves by practicing the interview in front of people and even doing more research on the company.
You don’t want to be ambushed when you get the interview call so prepare in advance!
