When it comes to public speaking very few people don’t get nervous. The difference between good public speakers and bad ones is that they know how to handle the nervousness with some even using it as a motivating factor.
Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, Pubic Speaking is an important part of career growth and success and as such it is important that you master this skill.
In this article, check out some tips on how you can overcome your nerves when it comes to public speaking.

Here Are Tips On How To Handle Nervousness During Public Speaking

1. Get To Know Your Topic
The only way you can truly be confident in your speech is if you are confident in what you are saying. Meaning the more you know about a subject the more confidently you can speak on it.
This means that before your presentation, you need to ensure that you have done thorough research on your topic and have extensive knowledge on the same. This will ensure that you are sure of what you are saying which will help combat your nervousness.

2. Get Organized
Being disorganized will only contribute to your nervousness when it comes to public speaking. Therefore, you need to ensure that you plan out your presentation. Check all your visual aids and ensure they are okay. The more organized you are, the less nervous you’ll be.
This means you have to arrive at the venue earlier than when your presentation starts in order to have time to go through your equipment. You don’t want your laptop to go off while you are in the middle of a PowerPoint presentation.
Having everything you plan to use in the presentation in order will gave you a sense of confidence and that will help curb some of your nervousness.
3. Practice
Practice makes perfect and as such the more you practice your presentation the better you become. You can even go as far as having some of your friends sit and listen to your whole speech and then give you feedback.
If you are self conscious and don’t want to practice with anyone else, you can also make a video of your presentation so you can watch it and see where you need to make improvements.
This will enable you to know what you need to work on in terms of your public speaking be it body language, making eye contact or whatever it is.
4. Invest in Visual Aids
These include; PowerPoint presentations, notes and so much more. This is a good way to ensure that the audience is not always looking at you but at the props you have provided. Giving them notes on your presentation will also help keep them involved in your presentation which is always a good thing when it comes to public speaking.
Another advantage of having visual aides is that they ensure the audience doesn’t get bored and keeps things interactive which in turn will help boost your confidence.
5. Attend other Speeches
If you’re presentation is part of a larger series, then it is important that you try to attend some of the earlier talks by other presenters.
This gives you a chance to find out the sort of audience in attendance. You will also get to see how other presenters are handling themselves and you can borrow a few tips from them. Another advantage is you will be a bit familiar with the surrounding come your turn and that is one of the ways to kill nervousness.
If you can’t overcome your fear with practice alone, consider seeking professional help. There are various training options available where you can learn to be a great public speaker.
