Project Officer Job at Free Press Unlimited

A local NGO based in Nairobi, which is supported by Free Press Unlimited, is seeking to recruit a Project Officer.

You will be working in a highly dynamic context and should bring relevant expertise to support a South Sudanese focused media house in implementing various projects in the transitional phase towards becoming an independent and sustainable media house.

Under the supervision of the Senior Project and Operations Manager, and in close collaboration with the Project Coordinator based in the headquarters of Free Press Unlimited, you will be responsible for substantive, organisational and administrative project management support.

Responsibilities

Project preparation

  • Supports Programme Coordinator and Senior Project and Operations Manager (SPOM) in the design of project proposals
  • Takes care of part of organising the internal division of tasks arising from acquisition and preparation of projects
  • Helps to develop and supervises detailed plans of action per project.
  • Helps to develop contracts and agreements with service providers and partner organisations
  • Helps in the preparation and development of project budgets.

Project implementation

  • Supports Programme Coordinator and SPOM with the planning, organisation, reporting (financial and narrative) and implementation of projects. All within the financial and qualitative framework established by local management (and Amsterdam based Programme Coordinator).
  • Monitors the progress and execution of the project activities, as instructed and provides information on any deviation and/or stagnation.
  • Explains and implements procedures etc. to other colleagues within the project and to external parties.
  • Assists in the planning and organising of gatherings, meetings and visits in the context of projects both in Nairobi and abroad.

General project tasks

  • Takes minutes and writes reports of project gatherings, meetings and trainings.
  • Provides qualitative and quantitative data for the evaluation and the substantive and financial project reports.
  • Drafts bi-monthly progress report of activities.
  • Stays up-to-date with current developments relating to the work of the organisation.
  • Signals bottlenecks in processes. Provides input for more efficient processes and methods.

Qualifications

  • Uni of Applied Sciences level of working and thinking.
  • At least 1-3 years’ experience in a supporting position, preferably in an international environment.
  • Knowledge of project management and the relevant methodologies, especially within an NGO context.
  • Experience working in a multi-project, multi-donor environment.
  • Good written and spoken command of English. Arabic is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of media, journalism and/or sustainable (media) development.
  • Experience in collecting and organising of, at times, complex information.
  • Experience in the logistical organisation of activities and meetings.
  • Affiliation with South Sudan context.
