Fibre & Outside Plant Supervisor Job In Nairobi

Purpose of the Job

The Fibre and OSP Supervisor oversees on-going fibre optic & civil work activities delivered by field engineers assuring adherence to agreed scope of work and deliveries’ specifications, and managing and following up on changes, unforeseen hinders and other events having an impact on project scope, cost and time.

The OSP Supervisor will be involved in the day to day communication with the service providers, as well as with Customer and Local Authority organizations in the construction of the Fiber project.

Key Measures on Performance

  • Assurance in compliance to Industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Splice fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables. Construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
  • Performs construction, splicing, distribution changes of the OSP fiber optic cables.
  • Performs tests on the OSP network to trouble shoot problems and makes necessary repairs on the OSP facilities once problem is identified.
  • Perform site survey to identify and approve the BOQ and ensures work is done according to ITC quality standards.
  • Fusion splices fiber optic cable, mounts splice closures and ONT’s and performs other OSP functions as directed by the OSP engineer.
  • Prepare engineering Field notes. Interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field with clarity and detail and make recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies.
  • Coordinates works with contractors and assists in maintenance schedules and protocols.
  • Attends safety and compliance meetings and attends training as required.
  • Being a primary interface with local authorities, SP and customer regarding appropriate work permits and licenses.

 Qualifications

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering or equivalent expertise.
  • FTTx and/or blown fibre deployment experience are distinct advantages i.e. fibre termination using fusion splicing, testing fibre links with OTDR.
  • Familiarity with the requirements of Health & Safety legislation
  • User experience for Microsoft Office Tools including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Project;
  • User experience for Visio/AutoCAD/GIS tools is desired

Skills and Knowledge

  • At least 3 years in telecommunications industry, with 2 years’ experience in Fiber network deployments
  • Specific Knowledge of Civil Works planning applications with Local Authorities.
  • Thorough understanding of industry practices/standards, operations, contract management.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team-oriented environment; Team player with well-developed interpersonal skills who is comfortable in a cross-functional, multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong communication and writing skills with the ability to clearly explain issues to contractors and fellow employees.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Good time management.
  • Ability to read and understand maps, drawings, and diagrams for fiber construction.
  • Fiber and Microwaves knowledge.
  • History of adhering to safety procedures and practices.
  • High degree of focus and attention to detail/strong organizational skills.
