The Position Description

The Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi is looking to appoint a Statistician with passion and skills in data analysis.

About CEMA

  • The Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) is a Center of Excellence at the University of Nairobi committed to using data-driven approaches to guide the control of infectious diseases and improve public health in Kenya and the African continent.
  • Established in 2020, CEMA has played a critical role in the use of applied epidemiolocal modeling and analytics including on COVID-19 (to guide responses to the pandemic in Kenya and the continent); Neglected Tropical Diseases (to catalyze their control and elimination); delivery of essential health services (to guide their maintenance during health emergencies); and in training in quantitative skills needed to manage and analyze health data to address priority public health questions in the region. CEMA receives support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Duty Station: Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis, located in the University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Reporting to: CEMA Co-Directors

Position Responsibilities

  • Working with the Co-Directors to determine the correct data to collect for projects and how this should be gathered
  • Perform advanced statistical analysis of data
  • Actively interrogate data for discrepancies, errors, and missing data, to verify accuracy and validity
  • Assist in training other staff members on data analysis
  • Participate in scientific writing
  • Contribute to the writing of technical reports

Job Specifications, Applicants shall have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or Biostatistics
  • Master’s degree in Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, or Mathematics
  • At least 5 years experience in high-level quantitative skills – managing, analyzing, and interpreting data using techniques such as multivariate, multilevel, and or longitudinal analysis
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with one or more statistical packages (including R, Stata, SPSS, or SAS). Competency in R statistical software will be an added advantage
  • Solid understanding of research and statistical methods, and data ethics
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret results with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Evidence of publication in an indexed peer-reviewed health journal within the past 3 years. Publication as a lead author will be an added advantage
  • Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills

Terms of Appointment

  • The appointment will be on a one (1) year contract, renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.
