“We All Have Earned Ourselves University Degrees,” Meet Music Group- Elani

If you’ve had time to listen to their music, you will agree they are a unique band. They have that different touch. Their band name ‘Elani’ is a Giriama word, meaning light.

“We are on a mission to change the local music landscape, and put Kenya on the international map by letting everyone know there is talent down here, ” Maureen one of the band member is quoted by Pulse

But can they be taken seriously in Kenya given the fact that they have chosen to pursue music as a career?

“When we were growing up, musicians were never taken seriously. The notion that music can’t be a full time career is something we want to change.”

Contrary to what many believe that you do not need to have a degree if you want to venture into the music industry, the trio has a different story.

“We all have been to university and have earned ourselves good degrees but still, all we want to do is music.”

But did their parents always agree to their career of choice?

“Our parents were opposed to this but they are now cool with it. Music is paying,” reveals Brian

The group met in January 2008 at the Alliance Française and quickly became friends. After realizing a common passion for music was shared between them, they decided to compose a song, merely for the fun of it.

After a while they soon realized that their love for music and performance and the desire to pass on a message of hope, love and responsibility to the world could become a reality.

“The first gig we did was at a funeral, then a birthday party. Times were hard. Right now everyone is calling with good offers and this is just overwhelming,” says Brian who adds that they are  concentrating on making a strong brand for their brand.

They have been on the limelight but the group has learned through the harsh realities of today’s music industry and can attest to the fact that the path f fame and fortune does not simply stop at getting a song out.

Sauti Sol’s Delvin, who has been working with them on a number of projects, says that,

“I think Kenyan artistes are their own biggest enemy. We hardly want to work together, leave alone uniting to create a powerful industry.”

According to Brian if you want to venture into the music scene and make a career out of it, you need to know how the business works.

“Artistes should know the market they want to target. That way, you won’t be caught in between trying to please everyone,” advices producer Musyoka

The producer reveals that, “Sometimes an artiste comes to studio and they have not even the least clue of what kind of music they want to make so that means anything can work for them,” this he terms as a wild imagination. If you want to make a successful career in music the producer advices that you have to know your niche.

And to whom does the group attribute their success to?

“The biggest plus Elani has besides working together as a team is the fact that we have producers and writers around us who help us come wth good arrangement. We also seek professional views from experts besides being in good books with the media,” says Wambui.
