3 Secrets to Passing Any Job Interview

Today’s job market in Kenya is so competitive that securing an interview has become a far-fetched dream for many. So, how do you do it? What are the secrets to passing any job interview?

The need to sell yourself in an interview is something you have heard time and again. But you can’t sell yourself if you haven’t planned your pitch beforehand. The truth is, attending job interviews is one way to learn from your interview mistakes if you are not successful.

Although you might not be the most qualified or experienced, mastering the secrets to passing any job interview will help you get a footing in that said interview.

That said, here are three strategies for succeeding in job interviews to keep in mind.

1. Do a lot of research before the interview

Research the company and the interviewers. Since the interviewer already knows so much about you from your CV or background checks, it’s only fair that you also know something about them.

“As a recruiter, it is a turn-off when, as a candidate, you have no grasp of the company you are interviewing for or the people interviewing you. I cannot stress enough that the first thing you do when you get that interview call is research the company,” says Mrs Kimani, a recruitment Manager.

Nearly half of Kenyan professionals go into interviews without understanding the company and its work, which costs them a lot.

Take the time to research the company on its website and social media, or ask people you know who work there. Also, check out their competitors and mentally list what differentiates them.

2. Make sure you understand the roles and responsibilities of the job

Before applying for a job, the first thing to do is know what the recruiter is looking for. After you get that interview call, go through the JD again because chances are that you will be asked questions stemming out of that very same JD.

How you market your best qualities and skills to the interviewer differentiates you. Tell the interviewer about your work-related interests, relevant experience, and things you enjoy most about your career.

Read between the lines on the job post to discover the skills and experience the employer values. You can also find information on the employer’s career page to get an idea of the type of employees they desire.

You can also reach out to current employees and ask them what their employer values most in the workplace.

3. Bring copies of documents indicated on the job posting

“This may sound obvious, but you will be surprised at how many candidates show up to an interview without any copies of their CVs,” adds Mrs Kimani

Most hiring companies in Kenya indicate what you should carry to the interview. However, a majority still do not follow instructions.

If the requirements are not indicated, it is always good to inquire about what to bring beforehand. Do not be caught off-guard.
