“It’s Not Fair” Kenyans Speak Out On The New NSSF Rates

The NSSF rates that are set to be deducted from Kenyan employers and their employees has ignited bad blood between various unions and the government.

This may soon be a reality for Kenyans because according to the daily nation, deputy president William Ruto has confirmed that the jubilee government will push for its implementation.

If implemented both Kenyan employers and employees will contribute up to Sh1,080 each (a total of Sh2,160) per month.

This is in contrary to the current rates where employers and workers are paying a flat rate of Sh200 per month each (total Sh400) to the State fund.

If this happens, how will it affect the Kenyan employees and their employers?

Kate Achieng a revenue officer at Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is so much opposed to the idea.

“This is not right, how can they demand a higher deduction of my salary and claim that they are saving for the future? We should just continue paying the old rates because it makes no difference anyway.

“If they do so, it means that I will be forced to cut on my spending because the same government is also charging me other taxations.” she laments.

Mary Akasa, a housewife in a Nairobi neighborhood is also against the idea. “My husband passed on 5 years ago and ever since I have been moving from office to office to secure his pension. I have never been successful because it is either one story or the other. What difference will it make if they decide to increase the rates?” she asks.

Robert Karanja, an IT consultant at a local firm in the CBD is not sure of the decision. “The government should first work on transparency and corruption at the top NSSF management. We are not against being deducted as long as we have assurance of our money when the time comes.

It is not fair being in a tug of war with NSSF when you are claiming your money.”He concludes.

Rosemary Mdezi, a casual worker at the government’s ministry thinks that the deductions will raise the cost of living.

“I work at a government office as a cleaner. The salary is not enough for me even with the old rates implemented and if am deducted more I don’t know how I am going to survive”

Do you agree with the new NSSF rates deductions and how will they affect you as an employee if implemented?
