Is It True That Daystar University Has The Best Graduates In Communications?

By Jane Okoth,

It is no secret that Daystar University is one of the most recognized universities East Africa and also ranked among the top in the continent.

The university is known for producing top journalists in the country like Larry Madowo, Johnson Mwakazi, Waihiga Mwaura, Lizz Ntojira and comedian Eric Omondi .

With the perception that Daystar University produces the best graduates in journalism and communication, are other universities and colleges unfairly profiled?

In one of the previous articles on Career Point Kenya, a list of universities that top employers are more likely to favor when hiring was provided.

Does this mean that your learning institution is more likely to determine your chances of getting a job?

“This is not only an assumption but a living proof that it is one of the best universities in communication,” says Patricia Ambira, a Magazine Writer who graduated from Daystar University.

“Have a look at prominent and hardworking journalists in the country. They all came from Daystar University,” she adds.

Barbra Ngesa, a graduate at a Public University in the country is of the opinion that the notion is likely to create the wrong impression for graduates in other universities.

“Does it mean that we will not get any jobs yet we studied communication in other universities? This perception is killing the morale of job seekers from other universities,” she argues.

She also admits that, “As much as I would like to accept that majority of media personnel are from Daystar University, it does not qualify to be among the best in the country.”

“There are a number of good universities such as University of Nairobi, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and Multimedia University,” points out Mathew Omari, a Human Resource Officer at a local NGO in the country.

“Generalizing is not a good idea because I am tempted to think that somebody may go to the university and not work hard expecting to be successful in his career based on these false perceptions,” he says.

“What matters the most are your skills and how much you can deliver but not about the university you attended,” he elaborates.

“There are thousands of graduates from other universities who have done communication and journalism. Does it mean their fate is sealed?” he poses.

Philip Ochieng, a General Manager at a leading Insurance Company agrees that people should not be judged based on the universities they attended.

“What you are taught in the university is very different with what you will apply in the workplace,” he says.

He further adds that “We should not judge people based on the university they attended because education alone cannot make you a competent professional.”

He too agrees that we cannot ignore certain universities do excel in some fields of study.

“I have seen graduates from prestigious universities who end up falling short of their expectations when it comes to performing in the workplace,” he concludes.

What are your thoughts on the subject? Is it true that daystar has the best communication graduates?
