By Elizabeth Benu

With the IT industry becoming saturated, it is no longer easy to get a job. They may be well paying and candidates should invest in right qualifications since there are some IT courses that will not take you anywhere.

If you are going for an IT Support Assistant interview, what questions are you likely to expect?

1. Tell us about yourself

“It is always advisable to say your name, age, educational and professional qualifications, work experience and what interested you in the job. Ensure that you give a practical example,” says Perminus Wainaina the Lead Recruiter at Corporate Staffing Services.

“My name is Hillary Ochieng’; a 25 year old who is passionate about business and technology. I have a degree in Computer Science from Kenyatta University and more than one year experience in a help desk support environment. In this environment I have learnt the basic hardware and software troubleshooting skills and under limited supervision responded to customers’ inquiries concerning support requests and systems status.”

2. What are your strengths?

“In this question pick the skills that you possess and do very well in. The job description will guide you,” he advises.

“Working at XYZ Company gave me an experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Familiarity with a relational database software – MS SQL. I also have proficiency with Crystal Reports and Net (Vb + Asp) which have come in handy in performance of preventative maintenance, including the installation of service packs and patches.”

3. How do you keep current with this industry?

“Mention your memberships relevant to your discipline or events that you go to that are relevant to your industry,” Mr. Wainaina says.

“I am a member of the Information Communication Technology Association of Kenya and I go to their events every year and I am planning on attending one next year. I am subscribed to the CIO East Africa Magazine and I have found that over the years reading this magazine really gives me a broad perspective of the industry. Apart from taking refresher courses, I also have lots of friends and work mates who I talk with which helps me stay current.”

4. What are your weaknesses?

This mainly asks on what you need to improve on your profession

“I am still unable to effectively maintain and develop working knowledge of proprietary software and analyze software/database errors in a complex business environment. In regard to this I have already enrolled for an evening class at XXX College.”

5. Why do you want to work here?

Back up what you say with examples or physical evidence. Always pick a gap in your CV such as a skill that is unutilized.

“The growth of the organization is why I am impressed and want to join your company. I have also read your annual reports and features in industry magazines and found that you offer great career opportunities. This is also an opportunity for me to create and maintain technical articles for publication which I haven’t done before in my career.”

6. What are you salary requirements?

“Do as research on this before getting to the interview. Find out how much people in similar positions are being paid. Do not sound greedy nor undersell yourself,” says Chris Camelot of Spark Hire.

“Having done my research and based on my experience I expect a range of Kshs.45,000 to Kshs.60,000. I am however willing to negotiate to a figure that can appease both parties.”
