I Was Denied A Raise After 14 Years Of Service But My Colleague Of 3 Years Was Given

When you have been working at the same company for so many years, it is only natural that you would expect a salary raise after so many years of service.

What if your boss refuses you the raise, but a colleague who just started out is given a higher advantage?

This Is Millicent’s Story

“I am a teacher by profession and I work for an international school in Nairobi. I have been working for the institution for 14 years. Despite doing a good job and my students getting some of the best marks, I am yet to, enjoy the fruits of my labour.

I got that job a few years after struggling to get a job. I love my job and my students give me the motivation to keep going. However, these past few days have got me questioning whether my employer hates me or not.

My pleas to get a salary increase after so many years of service have fallen on deaf ears. When I got this job, I did not have a family and life was a bit easy. Now with two kids, it’s becoming hard to survive on the salary I am given.

I had enrolled my children in the same school since it was one of the privileges we enjoyed as teachers in the school. However, I was recently asked to withdraw my children from the school since they felt that my salary wasn’t enough to cater for their school fees. So many years I have asked for a salary increase, but they won’t listen to me. I have had to find my children another school in the meantime, which is taking a toll on their performance.

What annoys me most is that my colleague in the same department who has just been working for 3 years did not even have to ask. Her son was enrolled immediately and she was given a salary increase. I feel cheated and betrayed and leaves me questioning my worth. It’s so unfair that after 14 years, I can’t even get my children good education leave alone provide for them because my salary is not enough.

What should I do? Should I confront my employer? I am in a really bad situation that has caused me to hate my job for the first time.”
