1. First Develop Your Confidence
I have been working at a recruitment company for so long and one thing that most recruiters say is that a desperate job seeker is a total turn off. Yes you have been unemployed probably ever since you graduated but showing your desperation is not going to work in your favor. You are not the only job seeker in Kenya.
Instead, have the confidence to approach a recruitment firm and inquire about how they operate and who their clients are and what is required of you to get a job through them.
2. Just stop being lazy
It’s too unfortunate if you are the kind of job seeker who just uploads their CV in the recruiter’s database and sits back expecting a miracle and wondering why they never get invited for interviews. You have to be proactive if you want to get a job. You can’t just have your CV in the database expecting that the recruiter will always refer to the database when they advertise for a position.
What I would advise you is that in as much as you want your CV to be in their database, be applying for jobs that are advertised. That way you stand a better chance of being shortlisted.
3. Establish a rapport and engage recruiters
People who work in recruitment firms are just like you. They are humans too and understand the struggles of job search so there is no need to fear them. Contact them once in a while and be professional about it. Enquire about a position that you applied for and whether or not it has been closed. Human beings are forgetful creatures and you may just be forgotten easily.
Keep contacting them but don’t overdo it and only contact them for jobs you are pretty sure that you qualify for. There is no need wasting their time when you know clearly that you don’t qualify for that position.
4. Always seek feedback
You may have been invited for an interview but didn’t get the job. Don’t just keep quiet. Contact the recruitment industry and make enquires about why you may have not been considered for the job. It could be because of your interview skills, CV or the presentation. They are in a better position to advice you and help you avoid such mistakes in future.
Most of these recruitment firms offer career advise, CV writing  and interview coaching services so they may come in handy when preparing you for your next big interview.
Recruitment firms if used effectively could save you a lot of trouble and time of getting your applications rejected. Learning how to play it cool and maintain professionalism when dealing with these firms is the one way you can make it in the job market.
