5 Simple Habits That Will Help Grow Your Career

1.Understand your career goal and pursue it with a passion

Unless you are certain where you want your career to go, you cannot achieve career success. The secret lies in your job description.

They say the happiest people in the world are those pursuing something they love. If you don’t like what you are currently doing, then you are probably in the wrong career and it’s the high time you pursued what you love.

2. Competence alone will not get you what you want

The mistake most people make is to assume that their bosses can notice the good work they are doing. You have to go beyond that.

Do a good job and let your superiors take note. Also, let them know that you expect to be rewarded for that otherwise you will just be a competent person stuck in the same miserable position for years.

If you really want to grow in your career, you have to ask for what you want. If it’s that promotion you want, let your boss know that you have that desire.

3. View your jobs as a long term contract, not a permanent gig

Organizations nowadays no longer guarantee lifetime employment and so it would be silly to think of yourself as a lifetime employee of the company.

Instead view your jobs as a contract where you focus on doing a good job, learning in your current position and ready to jump at the next opportunity should one arise.

4. Network even when you are not looking for another job

Don’t be that kind of employee who never interacts with anyone within or outside the office walls. No matter how happy you are at your current job and are not looking to change, you still need professional networks.

These will act as your referrals as well as provide career insights.

One thing to remember is that job security is not permanent but a good network of contacts will come in handy one day.

5. Fake it until you make it

I am not talking about lying in your CV 4-simple-ways-to-tell-which-career-path-is-right-for-you/ or pretending to be someone you are not. I am talking about those periods of self-confidence we experience once in a while.

The moment you start doubting yourself is the moment your career goes down the drains.

“Am I good enough to do this?” “Will I really manage this job like so and so?”

Remember that what you project on the outside is what people take into consideration not what you are feeling.

When it comes to career growth, unless you do something about it, you are not likely to get ahead. I am sure you know of a person who has been stuck in the same dead-end job for years. Remember these tips when you feel that you are getting into a rut and use them to propel your career forward.
