How I got a Job With KRA, My Salary, Experience & Advice to Job Seekers

By Jane Okoth,
Working for the government and especially a parastatal has become the envy of many Kenyans thanks to flexible working hours and attractive pay.

Kenya Revenue Authority, a tax collection agency in Kenya is one of the top best paying companies to work for.

Career point recently spoke to a current employee and this is her story.

How did you get the job at KRA?
A friend of mine informed me about the graduate trainee vacancies in a local newspaper. I applied and forwarded my application at the head office in Times Towers.

How was the interviewing process?
We passed through a lot of selections and I cannot tell you that it was easy. We had to undergo an aptitude test which was very complex. We then waited for a couple of months to be contacted again.

That was not all; we then had to undergo a one year paramilitary training in Email to serve as state officers. The training experience was torture but in the end we all managed to come through.

Which department were you allocated?
I was deployed to work in the customs department and precisely at Jomo Kenyatta international airport where i am in the bonded warehouse department working as a bonds officer.

What exactly does your job entail?
As a bonds officer, my duties include verifying goods that are coming in or out of the country if they are tax compliance. If not, I then have the right to penalize the relevant company or individual.

How would you describe your working environment?
It is tough and very busy but I love the experience so far. Working with KRA is the best experience ever because you get transferred to new departments and you can adapt easily.

What is the salary range for your position?
The gross salary is 85,000 with maximum benefits.

What is your best or worst experience in your job?
I don’t have any bad experiences because all jobs are stressful irrespective of the companies. My job enables me to travel to different places around the country and the continuous trainings I receive are a big boost to my career.

What is your advice on job seekers out there aspiring to join KRA?
My advice on anyone aspiring to work in KRA is to be patient and wait for the right moment.

All positions are competitive so it really depends with your qualification for the job. One more important aspect is integrity because it is one of our core values and possessing it is a plus.

What is your advice to the senior management?
To give more opportunities to the young people to join the organization because so many fresh minds are out there that can make us grow further.
