5 Warning Signs That You Are in The Wrong Job

By Elizabeth Benu

How did it feel when you first landed your job? You couldn’t wait to get to the office on your first day and just enjoy every single second of it.

Now that the rosy days are gone and it’s more of a struggle than a job what do you do?

You may probably be in the wrong job with no idea. So what warning signs should you be in the lookout for?

1. You do not enjoy

Beth Wanjira, a recruitment manager at corporate staffing services limited, says that if you that you are being pushed to deliver all the time you are probably in the wrong job.

“Lack of passion translates into not being motivated for the job. You took the job for other reasons such as money rather than how it would help you grow,” she says.

2. You hate your boss

“We all have expectations and characteristics that we look for in our employers. For someone who always wanted to work for a composed boss and is currently working for a temperamental one this may affect your performance and make you hate your boss. You will never listen to what they say or ask you to do,” she says

3. Your skills set do not match the job

“Your skills should fit into your job. For example a Mechanical engineer with strong skills in PR, it will be hard for them to work as an engineer. For one they cannot communicate to vehicles so they feel the need to utilize your skills elsewhere,” she explains.

4. You receive a huge salary but you still want to go

“Lack of job satisfaction may be the huge cause for this. For example if you came from a fast paced environment into a slow one you will not fit into the company, “ says Ms. Wanjira adding that, “when job satisfaction is low, you have an unsupportive boss and nothing else really excites you, then you are in the wrong job.”

5. No Growth and Development in Your Job

Most people get into a job to grow and gain experience but if you have not noticed any career growth that is not the job for you.

Ms. Wanjira says that, “Most of job seekers look for a job with a bottom line. This includes: career growth, experience, career stability and expansion of your knowledge and skills set. If you feel that the job is not geared towards the bottom line. It might be a wrong job.”

“We discover ourselves daily. On a first job one is allowed to make a mistake since a majority is going in for experience. A job seeker should use that opportunity to discover their passion, motivation and satisfaction when it comes to a job,” she advices.

She also adds that, “Ask yourself, ‘Where do I see myself in two years?’. This question helps you work within your particular dream or goal. As such, when it is time to move on you already have a next career path.”

Her parting shot:

“We all go after different things from a job. You can never be 100% satisfied in a job. Every job has its challenges so find a way to motivate yourself. There is enough room to make your job interesting; you are only told what to do not how to do it,” she concludes.
