By Lilian Wamaitha

Life can be frustrating in your 20s especially when it seems like you are not doing enough to get your life in order.

Some of your mates are already ten steps ahead of you and you have no idea how or where you will get to that level.

Well, I am here to tell you that the moment you stop chasing perfection is the moment you start living. Embrace where you are. Embrace who you are because it is just a matter of time before you get to where you want.

Yes, it may seem like all odds are against you but you don’t have to despair. You will get there somehow.

Even the most successful people in the world, didn’t find success overnight. Here are a few tips that I would like to share with you and ones that you should apply in your life.

1. Get off the grind sometimes

Family, friends, colleagues and even work can end up taking a toll on you. It is taxing and therefore once in a while just tune down and enjoy your own company.

Go off social media for a while (you have no idea how rejuvenating this is).

Go have some alone time.

Meditate on your life. Do all the things you have always wanted to do on your own.

It doesn’t matter when, but you do need to recharge.

2. Learn to say no and embrace this power

The most powerful word in the world is ‘NO.’ Learning when to turn down that party invitation does not make you the most evil person in the world.

Whether it’s a road trip or a favour for a friend, saying yes always can be very draining.

You are never meant to please everyone. Don’t be afraid to say no, thinking that it will make you an outcast.

Try it, you will be surprised that people don’t always explode when you tell them no.

3. Trend your own lane

It normal to want to feel like you belong and this can lead you to do things that portray you as successful as your peers.

In this social media generation, it is normal to be caught in the crazy. Just because your friends are flaunting babies and husbands / wives on social media does not mean that it’s your time.

And just because your friends are dining at the most expensive restaurants and buying the latest Gucci purses does not mean that you are outdated.

You know where you belong and don’t owe anyone an apology for who you are.

4. Develop interests outside your job, relationships and social life

Balancing life and other things is the most rewarding thing ever.

Develop a hobby that you can do outside your job or relationships.

Learn a new language.

Do something that is not necessary related to your career or love interests. Your future self will thank you later for this.

5. Finally, stop chasing perfection!

Chasing perfection is very futile. It will not amount into anything except more and more desperation.

Maybe you have always wanted to look like this and that socialite (not just for young ladies, yes there are men socialites today).

Chase being you and stop all this madness of wanting to be perfect. We all have our shortcomings. Realize that you are who you are and can never be like somebody else.

That person you admire may look like they have the perfect life, but what do you know?

We all have our inner struggles and don’t drive yourself down the depression road by chasing perfection.
