I can promise you, if you take note of these 4 secrets, you will pass that interview and land that job!
1. Confidence comes from knowing the job description
If you have been attending interviews without thoroughly reading the responsibilities as well as skills and competencies required, now you know why you never receive call backs after the interview.
I always encourage matching your skills and experience to what is on the job description. This way, you show the interviewers that you know your stuff! You can do the job, you are qualified enough to do it and you are the best fit for the job!
I always say, read the job description like an exam! For your information, 90% of questions come from the job description! Did you know that?
2. Focus more on the soft skills and relate them to your technical skills
I’m often amazed to see how many people leave out their soft skills during an interview.
Perhaps you’re wondering, what are soft skills? Plainly, they are also called “people skills”. They are characteristics and personality behaviors that enable you to work with other as a team in order to produce results.

I’ll let you in on a secret I have learnt in all my years working as an interview coach. It is not necessarily the technical skills that get you the job, but how well you use your top soft skills to get the job done.
For instance, do you consider yourself a good team player? Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team? How do you deal with difficult members in your team? How are your conflict resolution skills and how do you overcome challenges in your work through your problem solving skills? Do you have leadership skills? Can you lead a team? Are you capable of communicating effectively and forming interpersonal relationships?
Having you been leaving out your soft skills during an interview or glazing over them hurriedly? Now you know what to do.
3. Know the organization; research!
Have you ever been in an interview where the interviewer asked you, “do you know who we are?” and you completely went blank? What a costly mistake!
I have been able to sit in a panel of interviewers and whenever this question is asked, I hear half-baked responses that show lack of preparation in candidates. Most will mention a company’s vision and that’s it!
If this is you, time has come to step up!
Whenever you are asked about this question, always mention the current good things the company is doing. I can assure you mentioning their vision broadly will not get you the job.
Find out things like, have they been on the news (for good reasons), what new projects are they currently undertaking? What is their organizational culture, what are some of the ways they give back to the community? Etc.
Imagine if every other person mentioned their vision and you mentioned all these things? Don’t you think you would stand out from your competitors?
4. Lastly, why should we hire you?
This is a tough one isn’t it? However, if you understand what the employer wants to hear, it really shouldn’t make you worry.
