6 Things Every 20 Something Should Stop Doing To Succeed In Life

By Michelle Wanjiku
When it comes to achieving success, there are things you need to stop doing in order to start moving in the right direction.
Your 20’s are for making mistakes and figuring your life out but this does not mean that every mistake should be made.
If you want to achieve success in your life and career there are things you need to let go off.
1. Your ego and pride
There should be no space for egocentrism and pride in your career if you want to succeed. This is because you will most likely be required to do things you do not want to do like take an unpaid internship or live a modest lifestyle.
After completing your studies you probably believe that you are entitled to a well-paying job and as such will snub all the low paying positions you come across. This will be detrimental to your career because you then miss out on opportunities to gain valuable experience that will help you land the well-paying job.
2. Saying yes to everything
This might seem contradictory to the first point but it really isn’t. Think about it, how many times have you found yourself doing something that you are not really interested in that takes time away from other important things you could be doing?
Success in your life revolves around your personal finances, career growth and more. It is therefore important that you avoid anything that hurts your chances of achieving success in any of these.

For example, you need to learn to say no to people who just want to spend your money leaving you broke. Not to mention that being a people pleaser will not do your career any justice as well.
3. Avoiding risks
There is a popular saying; there is no reward without risks. Since you are still young, this is the best time for you to take high risks. Like I mentioned earlier this is the time for you to make mistakes and learn from them.
You should not be afraid of the risks you take not paying out. There will come a time when one pays off massively. So do not be afraid to make high level networks just because you feel you have too little experience.
You however have to ensure that you are taking calculated risks and not just making decisions that are of no benefit to you.
4. Comparing yourself to others
You need to stop comparing yourself to others because it will not benefit you in any way. The thought that the grass is always greener on the other side is not always true. Not to mention that sometimes it’s all a façade anyway.
It might be tempting to compare yourself to that relative or friend of yours who has a great job, lives in a posh estate and drives a car, but you need to remember that everyone has their own pace. Just because you are not there yet doesn’t mean you will never get there.
Instead of spending so much time comparing, you should use it as motivation and focus on making your success a reality. You need to water your own grass for it to be green.

5. Stop being afraid of change
Just because you went to school and studied something does not mean that you are not allowed to switch the direction of your career once you realize that it is not for you.
Believe it or not, no matter how well you think you know the career path you chose, you will only be able to know if it is a fit for you once you start working.
So it is okay to want to change careers after realizing the one you are in is not for you. In fact it is better to do it while you are still young instead of waiting until you are in your 40’s.
6. Burning Bridges
This is also another very important thing you need to avoid doing if you want to succeed in your life and a career. No matter how terrible the situation was you should always leave on amicable terms.
You never know where you might meet these people again and how they might be able to help you out. This applies to both your professional life and personal life.
In Conclusion,
When it comes to your success, you need to be willing to make sacrifices and work hard in order to achieve your dreams. Use the tips above to improve your chances at becoming successful in your life be it in terms of your finances, career or whatever else.
