By Kibet Tobias
Why are you afraid of making mistakes? Is it because you are afraid of the consequences or you don’t want others to find out because you think they will judge you?
Interestingly, even the most successful people in the world are bound to making mistakes.
The fear of making mistakes might be keeping you from taking risks that can change your life for the better. What is important is knowing how to turn the mistake around and make it a success and learning from it.
This article highlights the most important reasons why making mistakes is beneficial to your professional life.
1. Mistakes help you discover who you truly are
Anytime you make a single mistake, you are able to understand yourself more and more. This is because mistakes uncover your limits, your abilities, what you can do and what you cannot do.
When I first joined the university, for instance, I had chosen to pursue an engineering course. After struggling with it for two semesters, I realized engineering wasn’t my thing. Everything seemed tough for me. I later left for a different course in communication.
By discovering who you are, you re able to be more tolerant of yourself and others.

3. Mistakes teach you how to live a life without regrets
Let’s imagine that tomorrow is your last day on earth. Would you regret the things you did or did not do today?
It doesn’t really matter what you have done wrong today, as long as you are able to take it as a lesson and live a regret-free life. Remember each day offers something new if you can take advantage of it.
4. Mistakes help you grow
As a professional, how do you expect to grow tomorrow if you don’t make mistakes today? Honestly, as I mentioned earlier you cannot learn anything new if you are unable to attempt new challenges.
For example, if your colleague asks for assistance in completing a certain task, even if it seems difficult it’s better to try and fail rather than complain.
When you get stuck and admit your fault the door for help will open up and people will be willing to offer assistance.
5. Mistakes teach you integrity
A lot of the mistakes we make happen when we break promises, commit ourselves too much, or fail to fulfill.  It normally starts as small errors but with time accumulate to something big.
When this happens it should serve as a reminder that even our smallest decisions have power.  Next time you will re-consider your intentions, commitments, and pay attention to the integrity of the decisions you make.
In conclusion, we all make mistakes and it’s natural. However, when you fall, it is best to get up and move forward. The above five powerful reasons will help you to embrace your failures, mistakes, and shortcomings because they make you unique.
