5 Sure Ways You Are To Blame For Why You Are Not Succeeding In Your Career

By Kibet Tobias
The latest survey by Kenya Bureau of Statistics shows that the number of professionals in Kenya continues to grow as thousands graduate from colleges and universities.
This means that if you want to succeed you need to be in charge of your own career, choices, beliefs, and habits. However, there are a few mistakes that you are probably making today that may be a threat to your career advancement tomorrow.
In this article find out some of the possible reasons why you are your own enemy and how to avoid them.
1. You have not set a clear vision for your career
Do you have a personal mission, vision and values? Just like most companies do, you need to have individual goals.
Most likely you can recite your employer’s mission statement very well, but if someone asked you what your vision is you are not sure.
What do you want to accomplish in the next 1 year? How will your life look like?
I know it may take time to identify your goals but by now you ought to know what you enjoy doing, what you are good at and the type of work that is important to you.
Have a bigger picture of yourself in the future.
2. You burn your bridges
You have probably heard of this phrase.
Of course, as you climb up your career ladder, there are people you will disagree with. They can be your supervisors, colleagues, or friends.
For whatever reason, you should not destroy your reputation by burning bridges.
The contacts and professional networks you have built over time in your career might recommend you to great opportunities in the future.

3. You have become too comfortable in your career
At the beginning of your new job, it is okay to be comfortable. You want to get to know your new colleagues and relax for a while.
But it reaches a point where your job becomes business as usual. You become so comfortable that everything is working well. This is the point where you may not be producing results as you used to.
You are no longer coming up with new techniques to push your career higher.
Getting stuck in a comfort zone is the worst thing you can ever do for your career because it means you not progressing at all.
4. You don’t believe in yourself, your skills and values
Do you believe in your professional values and skills? Most of us don’t which is why it becomes difficult for others to believe in you.
If you are not confident with your career, it is best to reflect on all the things you have achieved in the past.
They can be small but will motivate you to believe in your vision as you progress.

5. You are always stuck in problems and not solutions
We are all faced with problems and mistakes as we strive for success in life.
However, how you handle the problem determines your next step. If you are always stuck in your own faults instead of finding solutions you may not be able to progress in your career.
Learn to focus on the positive side even when faced with negative scenarios.
Anytime you find yourself having a negative thought, change it into something more positive.
In conclusion, if this sounds like you, it is good to start trusting yourself more than you trust other people. Be careful and take charge of every situation in your career. Take this advice into consideration and keep growing.
