How To Save Money On A Low Income

The saving culture is not very big in Kenya. No wonder so many people struggle to make ends meet.

To grow financially, one has to save. This, however, becomes challenging when you are earning a low wage. However, it is not impossible.

So how do you save when you have a low income and have bills to pay?

Here is how:

  1. Be Debt-free.

One thing that gives you financial freedom is clearing all your debts. Start by paying off your largest debts then down to the small ones. Do not ignore any debt. No matter how small it is, you will still have a deficit on your account as long as you owe someone. Staying away from debt gives you a chance to start saving on a clean slate.

  1. Downsize on Costs

When you have a low income, you have to be realistic about your costs. Cut down on your biggest expenses. For instance, if you are living in a two-bedroom house alone, you can move to a smaller one, to avoid paying for a larger space that is going to waste. Another viable solution will be to get a roommate to cost-share the rent. Also, look for a place to stay that is nearer to your workplace, for a reduction in fare or fuel budget.

  1.     Have a Lean Budget.

Budgeting your money is the best way to keep track of your expenditure but be sure to keep it lean. You will have to make sacrifices, which is not hard. Just spend your money in moderation. Things you can leave out are like eating out regularly. You do not have to completely stop eating at restaurants, rather, do it less often. Learn to do your house shopping on wholesale. This way you will save on the prices and also ensure you always have necessities in the house even when broke.

  1. Use your First Saving to Start a Side Hustle.

There is no need to have money in your savings just lying there. This will be no different from the money that flows from hand to mouth. To make sure your savings keep growing, use it to start a side hustle. Truth be told, no one who aspires to have financial freedom survives on basic salary alone. Find a business you can do or a wise investment. This will ensure that your money keeps growing and with time, you will be able to get back on track and not have to make so many sacrifices when spending.

Finally,

Always keep in mind that even small money matters. Money like twenty shillings can go a long way if put into savings. If you save twenty shillings every day, by the end of the month, you will have six hundred shillings. Get a jar and start saving those coins instead of buying unnecessary items.

Be mindful of your income, otherwise, you will find yourself in a cycle of living off one paycheck to the next and not be able to live within your means. Start saving today.
