The Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi represents Sweden in Kenya, Somalia, Seychelles and Comoros. The Embassy also represents Sweden in UNEP and UN-HABITAT.

The Embassy represents and advances Swedish policies, interests and values in political and economic relations, development cooperation, in trade and investment promotion and in cultural and information matters. It provides consular services to Swedish nationals and migration services to non-nationals.

Sweden has been actively engaged in Kenya for over 50 years. Swedish development cooperation with Kenya is governed by the strategy for Sweden’s Development Cooperation in Kenya 2021-2025. Swedish development cooperation with Kenya is to contribute to a better environment, limited climate impact and enhanced resilience, the democratic development of society and better opportunities for poor people to support themselves. Development cooperation is also to contribute to the prevention of conflicts in Kenyan society. In addition, it is to support a transition from development cooperation to broader economic relations.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, managing and following up on Swedish-funded contributions in Environment and Climate change by appraising and approving funding applications including budgets, preparing decisions, contracts and agreements; and reviewing and approving narrative, financial and audit reports.
  • Design of concepts to guide discussions on funding priorities in line with the Swedish Development Cooperation in Kenya in areas such as Environment and Natural Resource Management including biodiversity, Renewable Energy, Circular and Blue economy, and Green jobs.
  • Ensuring integration of environment and climate issues into programmes and projects funded by Sweden for Kenya.
  • Contribute to identifying and developing synergies between the various focus areas of the development cooperation strategy by ensuring integration of environment and climate issues in the focus areas.
  • Financial management of projects and programmes, including follow-up of disbursements and payments and risk management at the project level.
  • Support and contribute to the general work tasks at the Kenya section and the Embassy, including reporting to Sida and the Swedish Government.
  • Represent the Embassy of Sweden and actively participate in donor coordination fora, programme reviews and field visits. Build relationships and develop networks through interaction and continuous dialogue with a multitude of actors, bilaterally and multilaterally.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences or other relevant academic background.
  • Minimum ten (10) years relevant working experience on environmental management/programming, and/or green/blue economy, preferable linked to biodiversity, agriculture, renewable resources and/or waste management and/or planning in both rural and urban areas.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience on climate change issues and its effects in developing countries, with respect to rural/urban areas.
  • Demonstrable analytical skills and ability to seek information independently.
  • Excellent command of both written and spoken English and computer skills.
  • Good drafting and reporting skills are essential.
  • Experience from working with development co-operation preferably a Development Agency or other organization working in the development cooperation area.
  • Work experience with private sector, government, or development agency.
  • Experience regarding sustainable natural resources and environmental management, especially in relation to biodiversity, water, agriculture, land, urban development, and waste management.
  • Good knowledge on low-carbon development including renewable energy and/or climate-smart/conservation agriculture.
  • Knowledge of the Kenyan development context in general (including institutional structures, key actors, development strategies, etc.) and specifically in relation to environment, climate change and green economy.
  •  Experience of working with Results-based Management.
