Why is Having Public Speaking Skills Important?

I assure you, having good public speaking skills is very important, especially in the career world.

Ask me why?

So, I got my first formal employment three years ago; it was an internship at one of the top local newspaper companies here in Nairobi.

I was a very timid person then, which is ironic given I work in communication; it is more common to have shy communication specialists than you think.

After some introductions here and there, this one lady struck my attention. She was young yet very bold.

All I kept thinking was, wow, I want to be like her.

Whenever she would address a meeting, she was very composed, had her facts straight, and managed to keep us all glued to what she was saying.

Good Public Speaking Skills took her Places

Being a good speaker she was, she was often assigned to top stories. Her skills made our supervisors trust that she would deliver the best stories for their papers.

She interacted with top leaders very confidently, interviewed them, and wrote wonderful news pieces.

I checked up on her recently and she has now ventured into business; it goes without saying, she is winning.

Her excellent public speaking skills are still the reason she is shining.  With her speech expertise, she has gotten the chance to network with great minds who helped propel her business forward.

Having seen it first hand, her experience has encouraged me to work on my public speaking skills.

Now if today you decide to perfect your public speaking skills as well, here is what you will gain;

1. The ability to handle the fear of judgment during meetings

In the career world, you cannot afford to be timid. It is human nature to fear what others think of us but you should do away with this feeling when engaging in meetings at work.

Cultivating your public speaking skills will help you gain confidence; you will not worry about judgment from colleagues or bosses.

2. The ability to give better presentations

You know, to give a good presentation does not only entail following the slides prepared. You need to have composure, a good storyline, and you need to give details with clarity.

Competing with your slides will only bring confusion, or worse, make it a boring presentation.

Good speech skills will enable you to learn how to tell a story that will flow and to convince your audience to a conclusion you hope to achieve.

3. The ability to build trust with ease

Words are a powerful tool when it comes to building or destroying trust. If you work in sales or aspire to, your potential clients need to trust that you to fulfill their needs.

Being able to speak to the needs of the target clients is the best way to gain their trust. Once you use your public speaking skills to gain your clients’ trust, there is no stopping you from making big sales.

Conclusion,

From the three gains above, you can understand how my former colleague has been able to achieve all she has so far, can’t you?

Public speaking expertise helps us exude confidence and competence, both of which are the most desired qualities in the business and career world.

Given the understanding of how important public speaking is you now have, I bet you want to polish your skills, don’t you?
